Action Alerts – Week of March 26th

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:
Please find below the weekly legislative ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24 and our legislative action teams.

First off, much love and respect to all the students who organized March for Our Lives Syracuse on Saturday. Some photos available here, here, and here.

Second, thanks to all who participated in the important conversation on racism and white supremacy at yesterday’s Coalition meeting. I’ve listed the details for Gina Iliev’s Tuesday afternoon talk at LeMoyne below.

Third, our climate justice team is partnering with a number of other organizations on a massive rally in Albany on April 23 to tell Gov. Cuomo to #WalkTheTalkonClimate. RSVP and get more info at CuomoWalkTheTalk.org.

Fourth, Congress is on recess this week and next. Ordinarily, that should mean that Rep. Katko is in town meeting with constituents. We know about one such appearance so far—on April 3 (details below). If you hear of any other planned appearances, please send them our way.

And now, on to the action alerts.

Today (March 26)

Early Voting NOW!

This is decision week for the New York State budget. We need to ensure that early voting and other voting access reforms are in the budget legislation. We need to ensure that $7 million is in the budget to implement early voting statewide in 2019. More details here.

If you’ve got time for four calls today, please call the “four men in a room” who are deciding what goes into New York State’s budget. Tell them that $7 million for early voting must be in the budget agreement. If you’ve only got time for 1 or 2 calls, that’s fine too. Here are the numbers:

  • GOVERNOR CUOMO: 518-474-1041
  • SENATOR KLEIN: 518-455-3595
  • SENATOR FLANAGAN: 518-455-2071
  • ASSEMBLY SPEAKER HEASTIE: 518-455-3791

Tuesday (March 27)

One action item today, plus two important education/advocacy opportunities this afternoon

Follow up on March for Our Lives

Following the lead of the brave students who organized March for Our Lives Syracuse, today please draft a letter to the editor and/or post on social media regarding Rep. Katko’s vote for (and co-sponsorship of) the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This bill, passed by the House in December and still pending in the Senate, would override state laws that prohibit concealed firearms by allowing anyone with a concealed carry permit issued by any state to carry his/her firearms into any other state. Indivisible’s guide to writing letters to the editor is here, our list of local outlets is here, and background info on H.R. 38: Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is here.

Intersectional Feminism, White Privilege, and Community Activism

LeMoyne College is hosting a talk by CNY Solidarity member Gina Iliev. 4-5pm, Coyne Center, Room 229.

SCSD Funding and Advocacy Meeting

Hosted by Uplift Syracuse. 5:30-7pm, 500 W. Genesee St. More details here.

Wednesday (March 28)

Say NO to bigots and war criminals

Pres. Trump has nominated Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State and Gina Haspel to lead the CIA. Pompeo has a well-documented record of anti-Muslim bigotry, climate change denial, and warmongering, and Haspel personally helped torture detainees in a CIA black site prison following 9/11. More details here and here. Today, please call Senator Schumer and urge him to oppose confirmation of these nominees. Sen. Schumer is at 202-224-6542 or 315-423-5471.

Thursday and Friday (March 29-30)

No actions today (until further notice!).
