12/12/21 Meeting. 3 PM. DSA Syracuse on Housing and Tenants’ Rights

Updates on Our Actions:

Last Friday, many of us showed up at the County Executive’s Public Hearing on Redistricting to object to the gerrymandered maps submitted by the Republican majority in the County Legislature. Yesterday County Executive Ran McMahon vetoed the maps. This is a major victory for all who worked to make it happen, but of course the fight is not over. Here is an update from County Legislator Mary Kuhn. And if you don’t have Facebook, here’s Mary’s conclusion: “It’s time to start over and citizen demands continue to be important. Please let’s not let Ryan McMahon direct this next opportunity to draw FAIR MAPS. Stay engaged. Keep your voices raised.”

Follow Fair Maps CNY on Facebook.

We also had sizable groups the same day at:

Freedom to Vote: Time to Act rally at the Federal Building at 10 AM; AND

NY Health Act Event, noon at the State Office Building. Pictures here

Tucker Carlson’s ‘Patriot Purge’ Is Too Crazy to Believe — and Too Dangerous to Ignore

The Fox News host’s series on the Jan. 6 insurrection is a piece of fascist propaganda that wouldn’t be out of place in 1930s Berlin. Read it on Rolling Stone

Dysfunction Is Central to the Basic Functioning of American Society

Pandemic measures like the stimulus temporarily helped and empowered working-class and vulnerable people. And that’s quickly becoming a problem for an economy based on their hyper-exploitation.

‘Carries shamelessness to a higher level’: Noam Chomsky delivers brutal assessment of Republican hypocrisy

Noam Chomsky recently delivered a blistering assessment of Republican lawmakers’ hypocrisy on the Afghanistan withdrawal. Read it on Alternet

“Speaking to Jacobin magazine, the prominent linguist and political activist recalled former President Donald Trump’s deal with the Taliban back in 2020 that would lead to the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan at the worst possible time; a time that Chomsky described as “the onset of the fighting season.”

At the time, Trump said, “We will pull out, and you can do anything you like,” he said. “Don’t fire at American soldiers, which wouldn’t look good for me. But anything else is your business.”

He then noted the Republican Party’s abrupt shift on the Afghanistan withdrawal. Although they supported the initiative when Trump spearheaded it, they completely abandoned that perspective once President Joe Biden took the White House. Even after Biden improved Trump’s provisions and implemented additional measures for withdrawal, he was still lambasted.”

U.S. Named A ‘Backsliding Democracy’ For The First Time On European Think Tank’s Annual List

The United States has been described as a democracy in decline for the first time in an annual list by a Stockholm-based think tank after a year marked by disputed election results and the passage of restrictive voting laws.

About Plowshares: Plowshares is Central New York’s premiere multicultural craftsfair, featuring over 120 local craftspeople and community organizations. A beautiful community of activists, conscientious consumers and fair traders gather for a weekend of commerce and communing at the Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace Festival. Plowshares is an opportunity to step into the kind of world we’re working so hard to create: a place of justice, of peace, of compassion, of environmental sustainability. This is Plowshares under COVID, so if you have been before, it will have some new challenges – but it will have the same spirit. So bring your good spirit and good cheer!

The Erie Canal and the Western Door

The Erie Canal and the Western Door

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2021 AT 11 AM

Event by Erie Canal Museum and Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center

Public  · Anyone on or off Facebook

Traditionally, the Seneca are the keepers of the Western Door. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy imagined itself as an extended family, which followed the layout of a longhouse. As such, the Seneca protected the Western Door from all. However, in the early 19th century American advancement came from the east. Along the way, the individual nations of the Confederacy did what they could to preserve swaths of their territories. Their actions did little to stop the westward American movement. This talk will discuss some of the impacts of the Erie Canal terminus on the Seneca and the Confederacy who rekindled their Central Fire in Buffalo Creek after the American Revolution. Join Dr. Joe Stahlman, Director of the Seneca Iroquois National Museum for this important conversation.
