The Occupation of the American Mind
|
A powerful film that exposes an infuriating reality. You cannot watch this film without grieving for the Palestinians, for the propaganda we’ve been subjected to, for the terrible mistakes we’ve made supporting horrific Israeli policies that have caused such suffering.”
Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink
Despite receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from those who have actually seen it, The Occupation of the American Mind has been repeatedly attacked and misrepresented by right-wing pressure groups and outright ignored by virtually all mainstream media outlets and North American film festivals. To bypass this campaign of misrepresentation and suppression, we’ve decided to make the film available for FREE online so that people can make up their own minds about its analysis of U.S. media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Democratic Socialists of America Is Helping Rebuild the U.S. Anti-War Movement
|
“I feel like I am running out of ways to describe the horrors hitting children here,” said UNICEF spokesperson James Elder. European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has similarly called the situation in Gaza “catastrophic, apocalyptic,” with the scale of destruction “even greater than the destruction suffered by the German cities during the Second World War.

Why is the mainstream media failing to report accurately on the upcoming election?
|
Again and again, the mainstream media have drawn a false equivalence … asserting that Biden’s political handicap is his age, while Trump’s corresponding handicap is his criminal indictments.
But Trump is almost as old as Biden, and Trump’s public remarks and posts are becoming ever more unhinged — suggesting that advancing age may be a bigger problem for Trump than for Biden…
Similarly, every time the mainstream media reveal another move by the Republican Party toward authoritarianism, they point out some superfluous fault in the Democratic party in order to provide “balance.” So readers are left to assume all politics is rotten.

The Campus Gaza Controversies Are Another Right-Wing Distraction
|
…And no college or institution should abide threats, harassment, or violence directed at the Jewish community. But it’s also undeniably true that charges of antisemitism are being used to silence as many critics of the Israeli state and advocates for the Palestinian cause as Israel’s most dogged defenders feel they can get away with. Chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine are being shut down. Pro-Palestinian events are being canceled. Publications are being pulled. And Middle East scholars are reporting that they’ve turned to censoring themselves more aggressively.

Hodinöhsö:ni Beadwork as a Cultural History
|
Wednesday, January 10th at 6:00pm
On Zoom
Join us and the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center for our virtual Deeper Dive lecture: Hodinöhsö:ni Beadwork as a Cultural History” presented by Dr. Jolene Rickard. The role of beadwork in Hodinöhsö:ni life has multiple purposes. It has been argued that the value of beadwork is held in high regard because the parallel expression of wampum beads has key cultural and political significance. Based on a survey of multiple examples of Haudenosaunee thought rooted in quillwork, wampum, and glass beads, a critique of the importance of beadwork will be discussed with a focus on the mid-1800’s up to the present. The attribution of “raised beadwork” will be considered as an important shift in Haudenosaunee cultural perspective with microhistories featuring Tuscarora, Cayuga and Mohawk beadworkers.

GreeningUSA’s Virtual Green Bag Lunch:
CNY Sustainability Coalition Organizing Meeting
|
Friday, January 12 at Noon
January’s Green Bag Lunch will be devoted to organizing a proposed CNY Sustainability Coalition, composed of organizations interested in advocating for social, environmental and economic justice surrounding the Micron project.
In July 2023, several CNY organizations began working together in order to interact with the Micron project from a position of greater strength than each of us alone might have. We collaborated to comment on the draft scope for the DEIS.
Since working together on critical environmental, economic and social justice issues is necessary for success, it is the intention of the participating organizations to create a framework for continuing the collaboration. But what should that framework look like?
We will hold a facilitated discussion to determine how best to organize the coalition for future action. We will share our ideas as well as solicit input from audience members on such topics as: organizational structure, principles, goals, strategies, and topics requiring joint action.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann: (315) 478 4571.
