Over 70 People Turned Out for A Rally to Defend Democracy – Syracuse, NY

Jan 6 Justice - Defend Democracy Rally in Syracuse, NY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Syracuse, Hanley Federal Building – January 6, 2024

Our President said, in his recent speech at Valley Forge, “History is the good, the bad and the truth.”

On Saturday, January 6, 2024, over 70 people turned out to loudly affirm that the attack on our Capitol was indeed the worst insurrection since the Civil War. And even further that this must never happen again. That is the Truth.

Judy Jerome, moderator of the event, noted several facts:

  • Within 36 hours of the event, 5 people had died;
  • More than 2,000 rioters entered the building, many of whom vandalized and looted parts of the building;
  • $2.7 million in damages caused by the attackers;
  • Pipe bombs were found at both the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters, and Molotov cocktails were discovered in a vehicle near the Capitol;
  • More than 1,200 persons so far have been charged with federal crimes arising from the attack.

Participants in the event agreed that our democracy is under threat and that voting is absolutely necessary to thwart those who would threaten our democracy.

In answer to the question, “Why are you here today at this rally” one participant stated:

“My name is Paul. I’m very concerned for the status of our country’s democracy. I’m against the fact that certain Americans would choose to follow a cult and lose our democracy rather than being patriotic and standing up for our country.”

Another participant, Kip, stated: “”It starts with my kids, all of whom are very interested in this election. I’m just not willing to give up my democracy and let it go simply because I won’t do anything.”

Another attendee, Michael, was more positive. He said: “The pro-democracy movement is strong. It will take all of the work we can muster, but we will prevail.”

This event was coordinated by Indivisible Onondaga County which is part of the CNY Solidarity Coalition https://www.cnysolidarity.org/. Partners included Indivisible Salt City and Public Citizen. We encourage everyone to become involved in the movement to save and maintain our democracy.
