ERA Update, Stop Project 2025 & Postcard Writing!
Join us this Sunday, August 11th at 3pm to learn about how we can add permanent protections for people who experience discrimination in New York by passing the ERA amendment this November. We will review & discuss Indivisible’s 25 things to know about Project 2025 because in order to defeat Project 2025, we have to know what’s in it and let voters know they have the power to stop it. Then we will take action by filling out 200 postcards to voters! All are welcome.
Agenda:

Share Your Health Insurance Story and Help Citizen Action
|
We are working on a project this summer to document experiences with health insurance. It would be a huge help and significant contribution to our efforts if you could take 5 minutes to complete this health insurance survey! Too many New Yorkers struggle financially due to medical bills or skip and delay care due to cost and problems with insurance networks. Most New Yorkers have health insurance but still struggle to get the care they need because of high prices, inadequate networks, and care denials.
Do you have insurance? Have you experienced challenges accessing care? Please share your story with Citizen Action of NY. We plan to compile the responses and present them to lawmakers as part of our work to win improved healthcare in New York.
At the end of the survey, please indicate if you would like to learn more about getting involved.

We know who is behind Project 2025 and the harm it will do to our democracy. We know some of it is already being implemented in states like Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma and at the federal level through the Supreme Court. You are a trusted messenger who can tell people about Project 2025 and what’s at stake this election, and Red, Wine & Blue’s toolkit can help.

Help save lives in Gaza, Haiti, Sudan, and in 70+ countries
|
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to attacks on hospitals and civilians in Gaza. Medical facilities and personnel must be protected and respected; hospitals and ambulances are not targets.
From Palestine to Sudan to Ukraine, civilians and medical facilities should never be a target of war.
MSF-USA is entirely funded by independent donors. When a crisis strikes, we are able to immediately mobilize and save lives—sometimes within a matter of hours—in places like Afghanistan, Haiti, and beyond. Help us continue providing medical aid where the needs are greatest with an unrestricted gift now.

These Swing State Election Officials Are Pro-Trump Election Deniers
|
Nearly 70 pro-Trump conspiracists are election officials in key battleground counties — and they are poised to make a giant mess on Election Day
“I think we are going to see mass refusals to certify the election” in November, says Democratic election lawyer Marc Elias. “Everything we are seeing about this election is that the other side is more organized, more ruthless, and more prepared.”…If employed on a large scale, the certification refusal movement would have disastrous consequences, fueling the fire of election conspiracies and delaying the tallying of votes crucial to determining the next president.

Beware Trump’s secret weapon: Elon Musk’s X-Twitter
|
Three ways to stop helping Elon Musk erode truth:
-
Establish accounts on Blue Sky and Mastodon. Musk-free Networks like BlueSky and Mastodon are the most democratic. Democrats should help build them up. Threads, too.
-
Stop using Twitter for news. Do this in preparation for the tsunami of disinformation coming in October. The site cannot be trusted and will harm your brain this fall. If you must use it, stick to the “Following” tab to avoid the algorithm. Better yet, just use the site to broadcast and check your notifications. Don’t let Elon’s algorithm frame the debate!
-
Go “Twitter Last.” Campaigns from Harris for President on down should clarify that they will post to Twitter only after updating other platforms. Steering the media away from Twitter helps democracy. Announcing you will make news elsewhere will send reporters and users to these other platforms, as will every announcement the media makes that says, “As the campaign noted on BlueSky…” etc. Political strategist Murshed Zaheed calls this going “Twitter Last.” A huge announcement – like naming a vice presidential nominee – would be a great time to try this strategy.

2024 state legislative races to watch
Who’s trying to hang onto their seat?
|
Democrats have maintained supermajorities in both the state Senate and the Assembly, but Republicans are hoping to chip away at those numbers… Democrats lost a number of seats in 2022, a trend they surely hope to reverse this year. …But Democrats are also on the offensive in a few races, looking to flip seats in both chambers while defending their positions.

Pass PROP 1, formerly known as the NYS Equal Rights Amendment
|
Tuesday, August 6, 2024, 5:30pm to 7:00pm
NYCLU – 499 South Warren St., Ste. 430
Please RSVP via email at VCoit@NYCLU.org or 315-391-7449.
You’re Invited to Dinner and Education Please join NYCLU to discuss upcoming outreach, phone banking and education surrounding PROP 1, formerly known as the NYS Equal Rights Amendment.
This November, New Yorkers will get a chance to vote on Prop 1 — the New York Equal Rights Amendment — but first we need to make sure the language on voters’ ballots is clear and understandable.
The Board of Elections has put out draft language that’s confusing, and even more concerningly, doesn’t mention explicitly that it protects abortion and LGBT people. Voters deserve to know how this amendment works and that it protects the people and issues they care about.
ALSO…CALL TO ACTION Please take a minute to fill out the link urging more clear and concise ballot language.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
