Syracuse Housing & Neighborhood Survey

The Housing & Neighborhood Surveys have been released by the City’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Development. Every 5 years, a comprehensive plan is crafted for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, analyzing current conditions, identifying needs, and determining funding for affordable housing and community development for the next 5 years.

The survey, which takes less than 10 minutes to complete, addresses housing needs, neighborhood quality, and available supportive services. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping funding priorities from 2025 to 2029. For any inquiries about the survey, please contact NBD@syr.gov. Remember, the survey deadline is September 6th at 5 pm.

From our Allies at the CNY Workers’ Center:
Support Crispín’s Healing Journey

For 10 years, our dear friend, neighbor, and compañero in the struggle, Crispín, has fought for our communities. He worked in the field, in the dairy industry and he has also worked in construction. During his free time, he worked with our communities, organizing farmworkers and teaching them to make their rights into reality. Shortly after joining the Workers Center of CNY as a volunteer, he took on the responsibility of working full time for the organization. He was the primary farmworker plaintiff suing New York State and ex-governor Andrew Cuomo for the right of farmworkers to organize and engage in collective bargaining. Thanks to Crispín’s efforts, that lawsuit was won in May 2019 and the decision in favor of farmworkers’ rights pushed forward a law that had been pending for over 20 years. Now, farmworkers have a law that backs them, which is called the Farm Laborers Fair Practices Act.

For many months, he has been living with a very difficult health situation, suffering constant migraines. Many medical appointments, tests, and treatment options did not succeed in resolving his pain, and in conversation with friends and colleagues, he decided to return to Mexico to be with his family, rest, and heal. …If you are able to contribute any amount to help Crispín heal, we would be deeply grateful.

Sanders Urges Ban on Super PACs in Democratic Primaries

The Vermont senator says money in politics is out of control, Democratic Party should limit expenditures when choosing nominees.

Sanders campaigned earlier this summer for Squad members Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO). They lost their primaries amid massive amounts of super PAC spending, particularly from pro-Israel forces ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The two races were among the most expensive Democratic primaries in history.

The Battery Mineral Loop: The path from extraction to circularity

RMI lays out a comprehensive strategy to address the rising demand for battery minerals. Battery minerals are not the new oil. Even as battery demand surges, the combined forces of efficiency, innovation, and circularity will drive peak demand for mined minerals within a decade — and may even avoid mineral extraction altogether by 2050. These advancements enable us to transition from linear extraction to a circular loop, with compounding benefits for our climate, security, equity, health, and wealth….

Accelerating the trend along six key solutions — deploying new battery chemistries, making batteries more energy-dense, recycling their mineral content, extending their lifetime, improving vehicle efficiency, and improving mobility efficiency — means we can reach net-zero mineral demand in the 2040s.

Join us to fight back on September 5th!

September 4-5, 2024

Syracuse Marriott Downtown – 100 East Onondaga St. Syr 13202

Thursday, September 5th

12pm: Gather outside the Marriott downtown

100 E Onondaga St. in Syracuse

12:30pm: press conference and picket

New York State can lead the way to a clean energy future by building renewable energy, yet recent announcements from state agencies make it clear our climate justice plan is in trouble.

A report from the Governor’s office signals the state may be poised to push back the first major milestone of the landmark Climate Law–70% renewable electricity by 2030–accompanied by the announcement of a NYSERDA “Future Energy Economy” summit promoting nuclear power development and other false solutions to the climate crisis.

But all is not lost! It was the hard work of grassroots movements and ordinary people like you that got our climate law passed in the first place–and now it’s our hard work that will protect it.

So join us outside this summit to protect the clean AND safe energy future everyone deserves: one where we commit to climate justice, reject nuclear and all false fixes (including “renewable” natural gas and hydrogen), and create the future that we want for generations of people yet to come.

Run the Redline

Sunday, September 29, 2024

Start/Finish: Everson Plaza, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse 13202

A 5K Run and 3K Roll/Stroll event that traces a portion of the infamous ‘redline’ that helped segregate Syracuse. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government worked with local officials and real estate professionals to draw maps that placed red lines around neighborhoods deemed too risky to receive federal housing assistance. These ‘redlining’ maps deprived Syracuse’s most racially integrated neighborhoods of opportunity, and their effects can still be felt today. Run the Redline to experience the physical spaces shaped by these federal policies.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

FIRST & THIRD TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH…4 TO 4:45 P.M. (Killer Drones)

Across from the main gate of Hancock AFB, home of the 174th Attack Wing of the NYS National Guard  training Reaper drone operators. 6000 East Molloy Road.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

A handful of us disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.)

EVERY  SATURDAY…9 to 9:45 a.m.

(range of issues: racism, Palestine solidarity  anti-war, anti-war, etc.)

Across from the Syracuse Regional Market, 2100 Park  St. at the 81N Liverpool/Park St. exit. Park in the Market lot on the north side of Park. You can use one of our signs or bring your own.
