Action Alerts

Support an arms embargo against Israel and a permanent cease-fire!

The U.S. cannot claim to be working towards peace while simultaneously sending the weapons that enable genocide. The only way to reach a desperately needed lasting cease-fire—including the release of all Israeli and Palestinian captives—is for the U.S. to exert pressure on the Israeli government by supporting a full arms embargo.

153 Groups and Onondaga Nation Allies Tell Gov. Hochul: No Nuclear, Follow NY Climate Law

153 New York organizations, institutions, coalitions, and grassroots groups sent a letter to Governor Hochul, calling on her to protect New York’s landmark climate law and keep false solutions like dangerous nuclear power out of the state. The letter was announced at a press conference on September 5th in the city of Syracuse (Onondaga land), where New York and Haudenosaunee citizens gathered to oppose nuclear energy — old and new — outside Governor Hochul’s pro-nuclear “Future Energy Economy Summit”.

Watch & Share Livestream  |  Read Press Release on Food & Water Watch

“Governor Hochul’s climate leadership is in freefall,’’ said Laura Shindell, New York director of Food & Water Watch, an environmental group. “Now, at the very moment that we need Gov. Hochul to be our climate’s strongest defender, she is instead wining and dining the slow, expensive, dirty and dangerous nuclear industry.”

“It’s nonsense in terms of our energy future in New York, even if it had an acceptable environmental and health footprint, which it does not, we can meet all of the energy needs of New York with solar, with hydro and wind and appropriate (energy) storage.’’ said Cornell University professor Robert Howarth, who served on the Climate Action Council that drew up the state’s plan to comply with the law’s mandates.

Flouting The Law: Major (New York) State Agencies Are Ignoring New York’s Climate Mandates

Top-funded agencies… are failing to uphold the NY Climate Law’s climate and equity mandates.

A new report from NY Renews and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest offers immediate and concrete policy recommendations to the Governor, the Comptroller, and State Agencies to meet the demands of the Climate Act.

  • NY’s Department of Transportation undertook 40 highway expansion projects without necessary climate and equity assessments, risking increased pollution and environmental harm.

  • Empire State Development allocated $780 million in clean energy funding without ensuring that 40% of investments benefit disadvantaged communities, undermining environmental justice.

  • NY’s Education Department approved over 25,971 school construction projects without essential climate screenings, delaying crucial health and environmental protections for students.

  • The Department of Health approved major healthcare facility expansions  without assessing or mitigating climate impacts, exacerbating existing community health disparities.

Opponents said all along Onondaga County aquarium would cost more than $85M

“Let’s talk about attendance. McMahon continues to project 500,000 visitors per year. That’s almost 1,400 people per day. Really? Our zoo averages just about 330,000 visits year. Adult admission to the zoo? $9. Adult admission to the aquarium? $25 — and that was when the construction cost were projected as $85 million.

A final thought: As Legislator Mo Brown has often said, “…imagine an aquarium-sized investment in housing …” The county executive’s focus on the aquarium certainly demonstrates his priorities.”

Contact the Onondaga County Legislature and tell them to cancel the aquarium! Onondaga County needs to build housing for families, not fish! The bid on construction for this vanity project is not due until Sept 24. It is budget time for Onondaga County and it is time for the legislators to move the funding for the aquarium into a fund for housing.

“Master Plan” from The Lever:

How did our democracy get replaced by a kleptocracy?

Hosted by David Sirota, former speechwriter for Bernie Sanders and Oscar-nominated co-writer of Don’t Look Up, Master Plan exposes the deliberate scheme to legalize corruption in the U.S., allowing the wealthy to buy policies that benefit themselves and screw everyone else.

The Lever has unearthed never-before-reported documents proving this 50-year plot was a coordinated effort by wealthy individuals and political ideologues. Over the course of 10 episodes, the series follows the historic thread from Watergate in the ’70s through the Citizens United decision and the current Supreme Court scandals. It’s a tale of famous villains you already know like President Richard Nixon, Senator Mitch McConnell, and Fox News boss Roger Ailes, plus operatives and oligarchs you’ve never heard of.

NOTE: Episode 3 focuses on the  Powell Memorandum, the plot for the corporate takeover of government, the media, education, etc.

Protecting New York voters from AI-generated election misinformation

From NYS Attorney General Letitia James: Some people are seeking to sow confusion into our electoral process, and are using AI to generate fake images, videos, and audio messages that can be misleading. … To address these problems and empower New Yorkers to vote with the confidence that they are fully and fairly informed, my office developed this guide to help you understand how AI can be used to create misinformation and what to do if you suspect a photo, video, or audio recording may be fake.

We’re in an Epidemic of Right-Wing Terror. Won’t Someone Tell the Press?

…right-wing political violence accounted for more than 90% of all attacks or plots in the first half of 2020, far outpacing terrorism from any other source since 1990. And since 2020, it’s gotten increasingly worse.

…the story mainstream media missed: More than a decade ago, a cadre of armed military and police personnel took an oath rooted in a conspiracy theory that a globalist cabal was working to steal Americans’ democratic birthright. That narrative was then mainstreamed on the most-watched “news” show on cable TV. And then a Republican presidential candidate exploited the narrative to mobilize a citizen army to steal back the White House after losing the election.

Run the Redline

Sunday, September 29, 2024

Start/Finish: Everson Plaza, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse 13202

A 5K Run and 3K Roll/Stroll event that traces a portion of the infamous ‘redline’ that helped segregate Syracuse. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government worked with local officials and real estate professionals to draw maps that placed red lines around neighborhoods deemed too risky to receive federal housing assistance. These ‘redlining’ maps deprived Syracuse’s most racially integrated neighborhoods of opportunity, and their effects can still be felt today. Run the Redline to experience the physical spaces shaped by these federal policies.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

FIRST & THIRD TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH…4 TO 4:45 P.M. (Killer Drones)

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

A handful of us disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.)

EVERY  SATURDAY…9 to 9:45 a.m.

(range of issues: racism, Palestine solidarity  anti-war, anti-war, etc.)

Across from the Syracuse Regional Market, 2100 Park  St. at the 81N Liverpool/Park St. exit. Park in the Market lot on the north side of Park. You can use one of our signs or bring your own.
