Tell Governor Hochul: Make Polluters Pay!

New York has a historic opportunity to make polluters pay for the damage they’ve done to our climate and communities.

This Spring, the New York legislature passed a groundbreaking piece of legislation, the Climate Change Superfund Act (S.2129B and A.3351B), which would force major fossil fuel companies to pay their fair share for climate damages in New York State.

Now, we just need Governor Hochul to sign the bill and make it law! Tell Governor Hochul to stop dragging her feet and sign the Climate Change Superfund Act into law now!

Onondaga County Legislature district maps must be redrawn, judge orders

Boundary lines for the 17 districts of the Onondaga County Legislature must be redrawn again for the 2025 election, thanks to the resolution of a court case brought by local Democrats who claimed the districts were gerrymandered.

The settlement acknowledges that the district maps created in late 2021 failed to meet a requirement of state law that limits how much the districts can vary in population.

Democratic leaders will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the next steps. Max Ruckdeschel, county Democratic chair, said new maps should be adopted in time for the 2025 election.

The Bureaucrat Who Could Make Trump’s Authoritarian Dreams Real

Russ Vought has a plan to take presidential power to new heights.

Vought is a wonkish radical who helped mastermind Project 2025 and is tipped to be Trump’s chief of staff. Given the opportunity, Vought would help Trump crush the federal bureaucracy—firing thousands of expert career civil servants and replacing them with partisan MAGA loyalists.

‘Obvious Conflict of Interest’: Report Reveals 50+ US Lawmakers Hold Military Stocks

“It’s abjectly terrifying that the personal benefit of any member of Congress is factored into decisions about how to wield and fund the largest military in the world,” said one critic.

…The most widely held defense contractor stock among senators and representatives is Honeywell, an American company that makes sensors and guiding devices that are being used by the Israeli military in its airstrikes in Gaza. The second most commonly held defense stock by Congress is RTX, formerly known as Raytheon, the company that makes missiles for Israel’s Iron Dome, among other weapons systems.

US Militarism Is a Leading Cause of the Climate Catastrophe

US military interventions are not just wars on people — they’re also wars on the climate.

“The U.S. military is the single largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels in the world,” Taylor Smith-Hams, U.S. senior organizer at 350.org, a global climate justice organization, said at a workshop on the Impact of Current Wars on Climate Crisis at the Veterans For Peace (VFP) Convention on August 17. “Militarism and war are key drivers of the climate crisis”

Run the Redline

Sunday, September 29, 2024

Start/Finish: Everson Plaza, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse 13202

A 5K Run and 3K Roll/Stroll event that traces a portion of the infamous ‘redline’ that helped segregate Syracuse. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government worked with local officials and real estate professionals to draw maps that placed red lines around neighborhoods deemed too risky to receive federal housing assistance. These ‘redlining’ maps deprived Syracuse’s most racially integrated neighborhoods of opportunity, and their effects can still be felt today. Run the Redline to experience the physical spaces shaped by these federal policies.

Micron is coming to Central New York and is scheduled to receive upwards of $20B in public subsidies and tax credits from federal, state, and local governments. With this historic investment, the CNY community has been promised thousands of good jobs created by the project, but there has been little discussion or firm commitments made regarding what exactly a “good job” is, or how equitable access for said jobs will be achieved for current local residents, especially Syracusans.

Please join us for a community Town Hall discussion around CNY Micron good jobs and equitable access.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

FIRST & THIRD TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH…4 TO 4:45 P.M. (Killer Drones)

Across from the main gate of Hancock AFB, home of the 174th Attack Wing of the NYS National Guard  training Reaper drone operators. 6000 East Molloy Road.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

A handful of us disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.)

EVERY  SATURDAY…9 to 9:45 a.m.

(range of issues: racism, Palestine solidarity  anti-war, anti-war, etc.)

Across from the Syracuse Regional Market, 2100 Park  St. at the 81N Liverpool/Park St. exit. Park in the Market lot on the north side of Park. You can use one of our signs or bring your own.
