Not On Our Dime! Ending NY Funding of Israeli Settler Violence.
|
Please ask your New York state representatives to cosponsor the Not On Our Dime Act: Ending NY Funding of Israeli Settler Violence. Multiple reports exposed the flow of money from New York to Israeli settlement organizations via New York-registered non profits. There are also Israeli settler organizations involved in war crimes. We must ensure that New York-based groups are not aiding and abetting war crimes. Jewish-only settlements play a vital role in entrenching Israel’s apartheid rule over millions of Palestinians living in enclaves surrounded by checkpoints and with separate rules and rights based on their ethnicity. Despite being in direct violation of international and human rights laws, NY-based organizations masquerade as charities, funneling hundreds of millions of dollars to the expansion of these settlements. By allowing them non-profit status, New York State is effectively subsidizing these atrocities. Write to your representatives in the New York State Senate and New York State Assembly now, and urge them to co-sponsor this legislation. It will take thousands of us taking action to ensure this is a legislative priority. Join us now.

Tell NYSERDA: Nuclear is Not a Climate Solution!
|
Alliance for a Green Economy, Sierra Club, Food and Water Watch, and many other groups have found NYSERDA’s Draft Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Technologies (if you click on the link, a pdf will download) to be a concerning mix of uninformed “advocacy” by a state authority combined with a cursory and inaccurate analysis of the state of the nuclear industry.
In addition to an organization sign-on letter (thank you, CNY Solidarity for your sign-on), we are working with our allies to get thousands of individual comments to NYSERDA by the Friday, November 8 deadline. Please take action today and then share this individual comment link with your lists and networks.

Be prepared for the “red mirage” tonight! – Robert Reich
|
It’s a dirty trick Trump used in 2020 and will probably try to use tonight, but it won’t work if you know it’s coming.
You see, in almost every election, Republicans appear to take an early lead. That’s the red mirage. Then that lead gets smaller throughout the night, which is called the “blue shift.”
This happens because Republican votes tend to be counted before Democratic votes.
It’s not magic. Votes are counted by precinct, and Democrats tend to live in more densely populated, urban precincts, while Republicans tend to live in more sparsely populated, rural ones. It just takes longer to count the votes in a precinct with a lot of people than in a precinct with fewer people.

Rebecca Solnit: We, the People, Can Make a Better Future
|
What’s also been moving to me since this election really picked up momentum a few months ago is to see how much people care about something beyond narrow and immediate self-interest, to see that we care about publiclife, about the fate of the nation, about the rule of law, about the survival of the most vulnerable. To see that we are idealists, we are dreamers, we are citizens in that sense not of nationality but of membership in the greater community. Something striking this time around is to see men speak up for reproductive rights to a degree and in a way they mostly have not before.

Heather Cox Richardson on the historical significance of Election 2024
|
We will each choose on which side of the historical ledger to record our names. On the one hand, we can stand with those throughout our history who maintained that some people were better than others and had the right to rule; on the other, we can list our names on the side of those from our past who defended democracy and, by doing so, guarantee that American democracy reaches into the future.

The Only Barrier to an Affordable New York? Kathy Hochul
|
From Invest in Our New York (https://www.investinourny.org)
Earlier this week, Gov. Hochul’s Division of Budget (DOB) released its mid-year update to the FY2025 financial plan. This wonky budget report updates spending and revenue numbers– all based on what’s been spent and what revenue the state’s taken in from July 2024 to September 2024.
The bottom line: Spending is down, revenue is up, and next year’s expected budget gap is gone (if you’ve been following the state budget for a few years now, you won’t be surprised that the budget gap has disappeared).
BUT (and this is a big but), IONY knows that contrary to what Governor Hochul claims in this mid-year fiscal update, New York communities continue to be starved of resources.
Read our full statement in response to Governor Hochul’s mid-year budget update.

Can Police Departments Be Trusted to Release Their Own Misconduct Records? Apparently Not.
|
“The lack of transparency likely extends far beyond Chester. Of 228 municipal and county law enforcement agencies that responded to requests from New York Focus and MuckRock, 72 — almost a third — claimed that they had no records of recent misconduct investigations or complaints.”
“Unlike a few other states, New York doesn’t maintain a statewide police misconduct database, making a department’s claim that they have a perfect disciplinary history hard to verify.”

Make Meaning of the Moment” after Election Day
|
Thursday, Nov. 7 at 8 PM ET
RSVP for link
Join Public Citizen, Election Sabotage Response Network, the Working Families Party, MoveOn, Indivisible, the ACLU and many more as we move quickly to “Make Meaning of the Moment” after Election Day.
Come together with the progressive movement for a community-wide post-election mass call to get expert analysis of the situation and learn how you can take action in whatever scenario we find ourselves.
Hopefully everything goes smoothly, every eligible voter is able to easily cast their ballot, and the results are clear and respected by all sides (no matter what results they are).
Unfortunately, previous elections suggest that some forces in our society may oppose the counting of all votes or raise doubt about the election results.
We need to be ready to respond and mobilize to make sure every vote is counted and that the outcome is respected and upheld!
We also know if Trump is elected that we need to be ready to respond carefully and quickly.

Rally for Syracuse Families: Crisis Action NOW on Lead Pipes and Lead Paint!
|
Tuesday, November 12th, Noon
Steps of Syracuse City Hall, 333 East Washington Street, Syracuse
Families for Lead Freedom Now, NYCLU, Legal Services of CNY
All our children deserve a fair chance at the start of life. Syracuse children are already burdened by decades of lead paint poisoning. Now, new data and media reports reveal a new source of danger for our children: contamination from many of the 14,000 water service lines made of lead itself. Lines that bring the drinking water into Syracuse homes. It is time to decide that burdening our children with more sources of lead poisoning is unacceptable!

Monday, November 18th from 5 – 6:30 pm.
The Dunbar Center. 453 S. State Street, Syracuse
Join Central Current for an interactive conversation about the state of local news.
Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.
We want to hear your thoughts about local news in Syracuse and Central New York:
Do you pay attention to local news?
What subjects do you wish were reported on more?
Do you think local news is accessible? How do you access it?
What role should local news play in your community, and is it living up to that standard?
We ask these questions for a simple reason: as a newly formed, independent, and nonprofit newspaper – we want to make sure that our reporting is meeting your needs. This session will help us improve our own work, while also providing a space to educate participants about the decline of local news resources and the work being done to rebuild them here in CNY.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
