Articles of the Week

Maxwell Prof. Sarah Pralle on CNY Solidarity Coalition on WCNY’s Ivory Tower, Season 21, Episode 20:

“My “A” goes to the grassroots organizers and organizations who are continuing to stand up for democracy in what is guaranteed to be a trying time.

One of these groups is right here in central New York: the CNY Solidarity Coalition. I give these people a lot of credit! It’s hard work, they must feel exhausted, so thanks to my fellow citizens for keeping up the good fight.”

Farmworker Challenges, Solidarity Emphasized as Threat of Mass Deportations Looms

A majority of farmworkers are immigrants, and anti-immigrant rhetoric and promises of mass deportations formed a key plank of the platform President-elect Trump ran on. Since his election, Trump appointed immigration hardliners to key posts. Last week, he confirmed that he plans to use the U.S. military to help carry out mass deportations.

Read it on Civil Eats: Our mission is to broaden and deepen the conversation around food and agriculture, amplify underrepresented voices, hold power–both government officials and corporations–to account, and inspire a more equitable, sustainable future.

Some lessons of the 2024 election

Trump won because he has tapped into something deep in the American psyche: Strict Father morality. This is a hierarchical view of the world, rooted in the metaphor of a family with a dictator-like patriarch whose word is law. Millions of American brains are wired to accept this moral system, and this is why none of the facts about Trump (his impeachments, his convictions, his lies) mattered.

Onondaga Nation plans a wild future for 1,000 acres of reclaimed land

The gathering was a homecoming more than 200 years in the making that stirred deep feelings among the group’s five members.“It’s really a very valuable spiritual thing for us to be able to come back here,” said Jeanne Shenandoah, the eldest in the group. “Now it’s up to us to determine whatever we want to see here.”

U.N. Climate Summit Ends with a “Bad Deal” as Rich, Polluting Nations Refuse $1 Trillion Finance Plan

After wealthy countries refused to agree to a $1 trillion proposal from developing countries facing the brunt of climate change’s impacts, the COP29 U.N. climate summit concluded with a $300 billion climate finance deal that is “a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed.” …. Brandon Wu, the director of policy and campaigns at ActionAid USA, says the U.S. in particular owes “a climate debt to the rest of the world,” yet has spent years performing a “great escape from [its] obligations” by avoiding and reneging on promises to commit its vast financial resources to fighting the climate crisis. …Asad Rehman of War on Want and the Climate Justice Coalition, … further discusses the deal’s shortcomings and what to expect from next year’s conference in Brazil.

ICYMI: Non-Police Crisis Response Programs Have Been Working. Here’s How.

As cities nationwide expand non-police crisis response, some common roadblocks occur. Finding qualified clinicians willing to work in the field—sometimes during unfavorable hours—can be difficult. The rise of remote healthcare work and a shortage of mental healthcare workers have made recruiting even harder.

However, experts say the biggest problem is the overall lack of investment in systems of care for people with severe mental health issues, substance use issues, and people experiencing chronic homelessness.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

Focused on the war in the middle East…Israel’s military genocide of Gaza and  invasion of Lebanon. We disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.) When the temperature is below 29 degrees, we cancel!
