December 3, 2024 – December 10, 2024
|
In our zoom meeting Monday night, we continued our discussion on where we go from here. We heard requests for non-violence training, interest in a book club, to learn more about Project 2025 and how we can rise up against it. The structure of CNY Solidarity was shared. How we are made up of committees that can take action and make their own decisions as long as it aligns with our priorities and values. The Coordinating Committee is here to support committees in their work by providing resources and to plan and organize monthly meetings.
Our 4 active committees met in break out sessions to discuss issues and organize actions. We are excited to have our committees reenergized to protect democracy and look forward to more actions in the future.
Let us know what you are interested in whether it is a book club, planning training, passing or stopping legislation, raising awareness, etc and we will do our best to connect you with others with a similar interest so you can come together to take action.

Tell your Senator to OPPOSE H.R. 9495 to Stop Trump From Attacking Dissenting Organizations
|
On 11/21, the House passed H.R. 9495, a bill that would give the incoming Trump administration unchecked power to shut down any non-profit organization that stands in the way of his MAGA agenda. Now, the bill is going to the Senate for consideration.
Under this legislation, Trump’s Treasury Department could indiscriminately label any non-profit organization – think tanks, human rights groups, civil liberties orgs, universities, student groups, even Indivisible Civics – a “terrorist supporting organization” and strip it of its tax-exempt status

Let’s ensure New York leads in the fight to protect democracy!

Urge Governor Hochul to pass policies that defend healthcare, our environment and civil rights! Blue state leaders have numerous tools to resist Project 2025 and defend their constituents. Elected officials often only hear from constituents when they’re upset. It might sound small, but a “thank you” or a word of encouragement can go a long way. Cheer them on, and be ready to stand by them when the going gets tough. Blue states can act now, and they don’t have to wait until Project 2025’s policies take effect. This is the time to show our leaders that we’re behind them, ensuring they feel our support as they take on these battles.

From Indivisible: Urge your Representative to call on VP Harris to publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
|
The ERA cleared the threshold for ratification by 38 states during Trump’s first term, but because of Republican opposition and legal debates about the process, the National Archivist has yet to formally publish and certify the ERA as the 28th Amendment. By publishing the ERA, the Biden-Harris Administration can put guardrails on the incoming Trump Administration and provide a critical tool for combating discrimination against women, girls, and LGBTQ+ people nationwide.
VP Harris was the first Dem presidential candidate to champion the ERA during her 2019 campaign, and she’s reportedly looking at the next steps for her political career. Your Representative can call on VP Harris to use her position to get the ERA over the finish line.

The Right Has a 150-Page Battle Plan to Shut Down Progressive Civil Society
|
Attacks on Palestine solidarity are the opening salvo in the right’s stated plan to suppress social justice groups.
In yet another blueprint for repression, another right-wing think tank, the Capital Research Center — whose founder also had ties to The Heritage Foundation — goes even further in depicting a wide variety of progressive activists, organizers and the groups that support them as “pro-terrorist.”
The think tank’s 150-page document, titled “Marching Toward Violence: The Domestic Anti-Israeli Protest Movement” lays out a multistep plan for targeting a wide variety of progressive and left groups – including everything from Black Lives Matter to the Democratic Socialists of America, legal defense organizations like the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild, and many others including Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace.

As we enter the darkness of the Trump regime, it’s more important than ever that we have access to the truth.
Here are the sources I currently rely on for the truth: The Guardian, Democracy Now, Business Insider, The New Yorker, The American Prospect, Americans for Tax Fairness, The Economic Policy Institute, The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, ProPublica, Labor Notes, The Lever, Popular Information, Heather Cox Richardson, and, of course, this Substack.

What to read before the storm
|
You might be asking: What should I be doing for democracy right now? I don’t think there’s a single right answer, whether you tune in or tune out. Whatever is going to keep you engaged and in the fight for the next four years.
Here’s one suggestion. As chaotic as things feel now, I can promise it’s going to feel more so after January. This may be a good time to pay less attention to the information firehose and more to the big picture.

Why Syracuse police, city officials plan to bypass surveillance tech review process to get ‘sci-fi-inspired’ drones
|
The new drones would fly to the site of a 911 call before officers arrive, often flying over areas unrelated to the call. City officials bypassed a surveillance technology review process they created to get the new drones.

When are we going to have the courage to stop the climate crisis?
|
Capitalism is driving the destruction of our planet. We have to think outside – and against – the framework of our current political system.
Multinational corporations are not destroying Earth because it endears them to the public: they are destroying Earth for profit. If we want real change, we have to be willing to threaten those profits – and to learn from the people who have.

Meet the Ideologue of the “Post-Constitutional” Right
|
Russell Vought, one of the architects behind Project 2025, believes there is nothing left to conserve. He desires revolution – and to burn down the system.
…Vought will serve as the head of the Office of Management and Budget in the next Trump administration…
He went from being a Republican operative who raged against government overreach in the early 2000s to literally drafting, as the man chiefly responsible for Project 2025’s “Playbook,” the avalanche of presidential executive orders with which the Trumpists hope to take over the state and reshape society; “from fiscal hawk to MAGA warrior,” as the Washington Post put it in a profile of Vought. …
He is also very clear that the Insurrection Act should be invoked to oppress protests: “We want to be able to shut down the riots and not have the legal community or the defense community come in… He certainly shares the frustration about the lawyers in and around the White House who kept Trump from invoking the Insurrection Act during the George Floyd protests in the summer of 2020…

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
