I don’t know what word in the English language– I can’t find one– applies to people who are willing to sacrifice the literal existence of organized human life so they can put a few more dollars into highly stuffed pockets. The word ‘evil’ doesn’t even begin to approach it. ~ Noam Chomsky

Demand the Immediate Release of Palestinian Student Activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention
Note: If you are not a citizen, please do not provide your real name in the “First Name” and “Last Name” fields for your security.
On the evening of March 8, 2025, Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil was detained by the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest comes on the heels of the Department of State’s announcement that it plans to deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. The student, who is Palestinian, is a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
Columbia University, which recently published a new protocol on its plans to cooperate with ICE, has targeted Khalil for his Palestinian identity and outspoken activism on multiple occasions over the last 17 months.

Free Delmy! ¡Libera a Delmy!
Delmy is a loving wife and mother to 2 young daughters, Skarleth and Lexi, who are just 9 and 6. She was detained on January 24 and we are urgently raising money for her immigration case and legal fees. Still in custody, Delmy has been transferred from New York State to Louisiana. Support for legal fees is critical as you can see from her story – we are now raising money to secure an immigration attorney to fight Delmy’s case and reunite her with her family. Please help us bring this mother home to her little girls! Any donation is appreciated.

DHS official defends Mahmoud Khalil arrest, but offers few details on why it happened
When NPR’s Michel Martin asked him to explain what Khalil did to be arrested, aligned with terrorist activity and potentially deported, Edgar did not give a clear answer.
“I think you can see it on TV, right?” Edgar said. “We’ve invited and allowed the student to come into the country, and he’s put himself in the middle of the process of basically pro-Palestinian activity.”

Refuse the War: Israeli Conscientious Objectors Share Their Stories
Recording of a Webinar . which aired Sunday, March 16, 2025.
Please join us to learn from and support the Refuser Solidarity Network (RSN). The Network works to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories and the militarization of Israeli society, one soldier at a time. They have valiantly stood by refusers serving jail sentences, elevated stories of refusers through social media, press and email campaigns, and educate the global public on the importance of conscientious objection as a tactic. More importantly, they help organize spontaneous refusers into coherent movements with strategies and demands.

Syracuse police again ask Common Council to approve funding for controversial drone program
The drone program has also received public pushback from some of the experts who sit on the working group. They say that evidence supporting the drones’ efficacy is insufficient and often comes from the drone manufacturers themselves. The experts also are concerned that the drones would infringe on residents’ reasonable expectations of privacy— and the program has the potential to become even more invasive through future expansion.
The Common Council’s next meeting is Monday, March 31 at 1pm, 233 E Washington St, Syracuse.

Billionaire Tax Hikes? Inflation Rebate Checks? New York’s 2025 Budget Showdown
Here’s what the key players in the state budget process are proposing on spending and taxes.
In recent years, the legislature has favored more spending and higher taxes on the wealthy. Governor Kathy Hochul has opposed some tax hikes on high earners, and as a result, proposed smaller budgets. She has also pushed to save more cash in the state’s “rainy day” funds, while the legislature has called for greater spending on current needs. This year continues both of those trends.

First They Came for the Immigrants…
Understanding & Responding to Mass Deportations
Mar 18, 2025 07:00 PM Online
At the forefront of the Trump/MAGA white supremacy campaign is the mass deportation of millions of immigrants, most of whom are guilty of no more than fleeing for their lives from war zones and communities consumed in violence, or in pursuit of work and economic security. Families are being shattered, lives put at risk. And like Trump’s protectionist tariffs, the deportations undermine our communities’ and national economic vitality. Join three immigrant rights experts and activists to learn what is happening and how we can respond.

Renewable Heat Now March 19 Mobilization
|
From our friends at Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE)
Wednesday, March 19, 11 AM -4 PM
Albany Capitol Bldg.
The NY HEAT Act is a critical state-level bill that would fight climate change by transitioning our buildings from fossil fuels to clean heating and cooling technology like heat pumps. It would also end subsidies for new pipelines and lower our utility bills to 6% of our income – it’s a win-win for people and planet! We’ll also be advocating for the GAP Fund to fund much-needed housing repairs for renters and homeowners including lead remediation, energy efficiency, and more to make our homes green and healthy.
If you can, prepare by attending the Renewable Heat Now March 13 Power Hour! (above)
Here’s a link to our new one-pager on the bill

Musk or Us: Protect Medicaid and the ACA!
|
Indivisible Onondaga County, Indivisible Syracuse, Citizen Action of New York, and CNY Solidarity Coalition
Saturday, March 22nd, 11am-1pm
Hanley Federal Building, 100 S Clinton St, Syracuse
Musk believes that “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.” So instead of empathy, he is resorting to stripping healthcare from seniors, babies, and working people!
Musk and Trump want to gut Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to pay for tax cuts for billionaires! Medicaid is the primary program providing comprehensive health and long-term care to one in five people living in the United States. With their cuts, more than 20 million Americans will lose their health insurance! Musk and Trump have made themselves clear: They want people to die. We won’t stand for it!
Join us for a rally at the Syracuse Federal Building and a march through downtown Syracuse to say: Hands off my healthcare!
We’re encouraging people to bring signs shaped like gravestones with what your cause of death would be without healthcare! Everyone deserves access to healthcare and billionaires cannot take that away!
Sign up now and bring a friend!

Homelessness In CNY: Meeting The Rising Challenge
|
Friday, March 28, 12:05 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
FOCUS Forum from FOCUS Greater Syracuse
Homelessness is on the rise across the country and here in CNY, increasing locally more than 60% since 2019, meaning that nearly 1,200 people in our community find themselves unsheltered or in temporary settings on any given night.
Having a coordinated community response is more important than ever in the efforts to end homelessness.
Each community across the country has what is known as Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care of homelessness. The Housing & Homeless Coalition of Central New York (HHC) acts as the Continuum of Care for Central New York. The HHC organizes community resources, collects and analyzes data from community partners, and develops community-wide strategies to streamline the homelessness response system.
This FOCUS Forum will discuss how the HHC operates and is structured, report on the state of homelessness in our community, and how our community can rise to the growing challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel).
