Action Alerts – Week of July 10th

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:

Congress is back in session this week. All eyes are on the fate of TrumpCare in the Senate, where Republican support has been hemorrhaging throughout the July 4 recess, but Majority Leader McConnell is floating a variety of sweetheart deals to get to 51 votes. In the meantime, there are important developments afoot on the environmental, election integrity, and net neutrality fronts as well.

Monday (July 10): Say no to dirty energy! (1 phone call and an on-line comment)

Please call Senator Schumer and urge him to do whatever he can to block the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017 (S 1460) (aka the Trump-McConnell dirty energy bill), which may get a floor vote TODAY. More details here. Sen. Schumer’s numbers are 202-224-6542 and 315-423-5471.

Meanwhile, click here to file an on-line comment opposing EPA Director Scott Pruitt’s plan to delay implementation of key climate and pollution protections for 2 years.

Tuesday (July 11): Demand election integrity now! (1 phone call and an on-line petition)

Please call Rep. Katko today and demand that he commit to fully funding the Election Assistance Commission. Not to be confused with the new Pence-Kobach Commission on Election Integrity, the EAC was created in 2002 thanks to the Help America Vote Act, which Congress passed “to make sweeping reforms to the nation’s voting process.” The commission’s job includes certifying the hardware and software used to conduct elections, but congressional Republicans are planning to zero out its budget. More details here. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).

Meanwhile, sign this petition, authored by one of our members, urging Congress to stop the Trump/Putin Working Group on Cybersecurity. This working group will likely become a focal point for Trump and Putin’s effort to undermine free and fair elections in the US. There is zero chance that we can achieve any advances in cybersecurity by cooperating with Russia.

Wednesday (July 12): Save net neutrality (1 on-line action)

Today, we’ll be joining a massive Internet-wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality. The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, they’ll allow widespread throttling, blocking, censorship, and extra fees. At his faux town hall at OCC a couple months ago, Rep. Katko indicated that he was unfamiliar with the concept of net neutrality. This is unacceptable! Today, the Internet will come together to defend the free and open principles on which it was founded. Click here to join.

Thursday (July 13): 1 phone call and one local candidates’ forum today

No unilateral use of nuclear weapons!

The Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act (S. 200) has 8 co-sponsors in the Senate. Please call Sen. Gillibrand today and ask her to add her name: 202-224-4451 or 315-448-0470.

Syracuse School Board Candidate Forum

7pm @ Roberts K-8 School, 715 Glenwood Ave. in Syracuse. CNY Solidarity is co-sponsoring this event with National Action Network–Syracuse Chapter, Alliance for Communities Transforming Syracuse, Parents for Public Schools of Syracuse, Greater Hope Syracuse, and Syracuse Community Connections.

Friday (July 14): 2 calls today (1 state, 1 federal)

Stand up for education justice

Today, please call NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (1-800-771-7755) and thank him for being part of a lawsuit by 18 states to sue Education Sec. Betsy DeVos over for-profit college rules.

Disarm hate!

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey and Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline have introduced the Disarm Hate Act—legislation that would prevent anyone who has been convicted of a hate crime from buying a gun. More details here. The House bill (HR 2841) has 21 cosponsors, all Democrats. Please call Rep. Katko today and ask him to make this list bipartisan by adding his name. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).

Saturday (July 15): March for Women’s Rights in Seneca Falls

9:00am: Join CNY Solidarity’s Voter Registration Task Force in marching in the 2017 Convention Days Procession in Seneca Falls, from the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House to Declaration Park. We’ll be celebrating both the First Women’s Rights Convention of 1848, and the Centennial of women winning the right to vote in New York State. Line-up begins at 8:00am in front of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House, 32 Washington Street in Seneca Falls. More details here.

Sunday (July 16): No CNY Solidarity meeting this weekend, but some of us will be helping out at the Workers’ Center of CNY’s 3rd Annual Soccer Tournament Fundraiser. The event runs from 9:00-4:00 at CBA, 6245 Randall Rd. 13214. If you’d be willing to provide volunteer help with logistics, please email nslade@workerscentercny.org for further details.
