The NAN National Youth Move Huddle brings together young people on a monthly or bi-weekly basis to discuss solutions to some of their most pressing issues and then put their formulated ideas into action. Youth Move Huddle has been pivotal in creating spaces for young people to organize around issues that directly impact them.

The Syracuse area hosts Hancock Air National Guard base where the Guard’s 174th Attack Wing conducts drone assassination and target identification missions using MQ-9 Reaper drone in Afghanistan and probably elsewhere. Syracuse Peace Council’s Street Heat holds a monthly presence outside Hancock Airbase to call for an end to the illegal and immoral killing of human beings by weaponized drones, which are piloted remotely from the base.

Feminists of Ireland have won a huge victory in repealing the 8th amendment which criminalized abortion. In many countries, there is extreme punishment for accessing abortion. In the US, malicious anti-abortion laws are multiplying, Roe v. Wade is constantly challenged, funding for abortion is being gutted, and many are forced into birthing children they do not want or cannot care for. What does it mean to have control over your own reproductive organs? How does race, gender, and class affect restriction to bodily autonomy? What is the history of reproductive oppression in Ireland and elsewhere. How did the people of Ireland organize to repeal the 8th, and what lessons can we apply here in the US? This collection of assemblages by Cazenovia, New York artist Jim Ridlon represents visual puns reflecting on the inadequacies and inconsistencies of our political systems. The work focuses on points of contention that establish party lines and inhibit the political process. Found objects are used as metaphors that comment on political strategies resulting in positions of power and dominance.

Westcott Art Trail (WAT) is one of the Westcott neighborhood’s premier annual events, attracting more than 2,500 visitors for a weekend filled with art, food and community.
Well known in the Central New York arts community, WAT is free and open to the public.
Visitors begin by getting the Westcott Art Trail brochure/map, either by downloading it from the Westcott Art Trail page on westcottcc.org or by picking it up at Westcott Community Center. The brochure/map contains a description of each artist’s work and their sale location on the map. Westcottcc.org has a Westcott Art Trail page full of artist information as well as photos of their artwork.
Explorers on the trail will find artists demonstrating in several media: painters, photographers, sculptors, printmakers, fiber artists, ceramists, glass artists, mixed media artists, and even creators of decorative functional art!

The Nuclear-Free World Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council, formerly Peace Action of CNY, has presented awards to local peace activists for many years. We began recognizing young peace activists 16 years ago. We have awarded high school students in Onondaga County who have shown a devotion to peace, justice, and protecting the environment and who have engaged in activities that demonstrate their passion to work on the underlying causes of war, violence, and injustice. We hope this recognition helps young people to intensify their commitment to peace and justice in our communities, in our country, and in our world.
New York Health Act Day of Action in Albany

Please join us in Albany for the annual statewide lobby day to advocate for the New York Health Act – the bill to guarantee healthcare to ALL New Yorkers (like Medicare-for-all for New York State!) The New York Health Act passed the Assembly in 2015, 2016, and 2017 with huge majority support. We need to pass it in the Assembly again this year and keep pushing the Senate to get this to the Governor’s desk to make health care equality a reality for New Yorkers.

Urban Jobs Task Force announces petition for equal opportunity jobs on I-81 project

We believe that city residents deserve equal opportunity to work on public works projects, especially those that affect their lives. The billion-dollar, publicly-funded I-81 Viaduct Project will significantly impact many struggling Syracuse neighborhoods, particularly those of color. It is only fair that capable and willing city residents from these neighborhoods benefit from the high-paying I-81 jobs coming to their city.
