CNY Solidarity Coalition

United in defense of our community and our neighbors

COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENT CALENDAR FOR MAY 29-JUNE 5

During this holy month of Ramadan, The Islamic Society of Central New York welcomes anyone to come to the Community Iftars with the caveat and understanding that spaces are separate, and unfortunately at this time the upstairs, if people want to observe prayer is not ADA compliant. Please follow the link for schedule of Iftars.

Be neighborly
Please respect our surrounding community. Keep voices and activities outside the masjid to a moderate volume.
Parking
We ask all iftar attendees to adhere to area street and parking lot rules. DO NOT block or park in neighboring property driveways.
Community-wide Iftars will be sponsored on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during Ramadan. Break your fast with the ISCNY family. Iftars are sponsored by various organizations and community members.

*Donations needed*

To contribute to the fund for funeral and memorial services for Selena Hidalgo Caleron, please click here: https://www.gofundme.com/support-estela-and-her-family. Follow the Workers’ Center of Central New York for the story and updates and ways to help. “Selena’s death is an immeasurable loss, but it was also preventable. We see her death as linked to the precarious, isolated, and vulnerable living conditions of immigrant women working in rural areas. Living with limited resources, little to no access to transportation, and persecuted by state agents, immigrant women are afraid to report domestic abuse or assault and often have no way to leave dangerous situations. As a workers’ center we stand up for the rights and dignity of low-wage workers and build community and organize precisely to end these cycles of isolation and violence. We will continue to fight for a world in which every person has equal access to basic services and protections.”

With your help, Friends of Farmworkers will provide temporary housing for immigrant farmworkers, such as injured workers who need a safe, reliable place to stay in their time of need. Please join us in our goal of helping to maintain this essential space. Please help fund Slocum House today

Contribute to the Syracuse Nan Youth Move Huddle.  The NAN National Youth Move Huddle brings together young people on a monthly or bi-weekly basis to discuss solutions to some of their most pressing issues and then put their formulated ideas into action. Youth Move Huddle has been pivotal in creating spaces for young people to organize around issues that directly impact them.

Lessons from Ireland in the Struggle for Reproductive Rights

Wednesday May 30th 7 PM – 8:30 PM ISO Sims Hall Sims Drive SU campus Syracuse

Feminists of Ireland have won a huge victory in repealing the 8th amendment which criminalized abortion. In many countries, there is extreme punishment for accessing abortion. In the US, malicious anti-abortion laws are multiplying, Roe v. Wade is constantly challenged, funding for abortion is being gutted, and many are forced into birthing children they do not want or cannot care for. What does it mean to have control over your own reproductive organs? How does race, gender, and class affect restriction to bodily autonomy? What is the history of reproductive oppression in Ireland and elsewhere. How did the people of Ireland organize to repeal the 8th, and what lessons can we apply here in the US? Come join the discussion!

Youth Peace Award 2018

Monday June 4th 7 PM – 9 PM ArtRage Gallery 505 Hawley Ave, Syracuse

An impressive group of high school students and two outstanding individual students will receive the Syracuse Peace Council Nuclear Free World Committee’s Youth Award this year:
Syracuse Students for Change (including city and suburban high school students)
Hussein Hassan from Henninger High School
Grace Getman from Christian Brothers Academy

The Nuclear-Free World Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council, formerly Peace Action of CNY, has presented awards to local peace activists for many years. We began recognizing young peace activists 16 years ago. We have awarded high school students in Onondaga County who have shown a devotion to peace, justice, and protecting the environment and who have engaged in activities that demonstrate their passion to work on the underlying causes of war, violence, and injustice. We hope this recognition helps young people to intensify their commitment to peace and justice in our communities, in our country, and in our world.

New York Health Act Day of Action in Albany

Tuesday June 5th 9 AM – 3 PM Albany, NY

Please join us in Albany for the annual statewide lobby day to advocate for the New York Health Act – the bill to guarantee healthcare to ALL New Yorkers (like Medicare-for-all for New York State!) The New York Health Act passed the Assembly in 2015, 2016, and 2017 with huge majority support. We need to pass it in the Assembly again this year and keep pushing the Senate to get this to the Governor’s desk to make health care equality a reality for New Yorkers.

Please register by May 29th! Register at this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeJ56VFa9g5sXmLrFFL_ErCR8TGJLJ-7OAD83cdq2Opma5eIQ/viewform

Because we expect to have hundreds of participants rallying for the New York Health Act, we cannot guarantee that everyone will have a meeting with their elected official since seats are limited in meetings. But we promise that you will be plugged into important work and that you are needed to send a strong message to Albany legislators that New Yorkers want the NY Health Act!  Questions? Email katie@nyhcampaign.org

Urban Jobs Task Force announces petition for equal opportunity jobs on I-81 project

Tuesday June 5th 12 PM Press Conference State Office Building 301 E Washington St.

We believe that city residents deserve equal opportunity to work on public works projects, especially those that affect their lives. The billion-dollar, publicly-funded I-81 Viaduct Project will significantly impact many struggling Syracuse neighborhoods, particularly those of color. It is only fair that capable and willing city residents from these neighborhoods benefit from the high-paying I-81 jobs coming to their city.

Please Save the Date for:

Kathy Kelly from Voices of Creative Nonviolence July 16th All Saints Church

Also, if you haven’t already please sign the I 81 resolution.  http://rethink81.org/take-action
