The Syracuse area hosts Hancock Air National Guard base where the Guard’s 174th Attack Wing conducts drone assassination and target identification missions using MQ-9 Reaper drone in Afghanistan and probably elsewhere. Syracuse Peace Council’s Street Heat holds a twice monthly presence outside Hancock Airbase to call for an end to the illegal and immoral killing of human beings by weaponized drones, which are piloted remotely from the base.

Syracuse Bike Share Community Meeting

Join the City of Syracuse and Adapt CNY to give your feedback and ideas on the Syracuse Bike Share Program, coming later this year!
The City has selected Gotcha Bike, an experienced vendor that operated in more than 20 cities across the United States, and will be joining us on August 14 at 5:30 PM in the City Hall Commons Atrium, located at 201 East Washington Street. Representatives from Gotcha Bike will share more information about how the system will work and ask your ideas and feedback about how the system should be rolled out, where bike units should be located, and how to make the system inclusive for all Syracuse residents and visitors to use. Public Hearing re: Clean up of Superfund Site at Onondaga Lake

As you may have seen in the Post-Standard, Honeywell and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation have announced their planned remedy for the Wastebed B / Harbor Brook site, located on both sides of I-690 at the south end of Onondaga Lake.
Environmental friends and advocates from Neighbors of Onondaga Nation recommend some key points if you are interested in attending this hearing.
Key points:
- Parts of this site are highly toxic.
- This remedy condemns the southern end of the lake to forever be a “waste management area.”
- Onondaga County has plans to extend the West Shore Trail across this property.
- To fully clean up the site, it would cost $1.3 billion. Instead, the proposed remedy is for the $12 million soil and asphalt cover remedy.
- When comparing remedies, the draft plan fails to account for the cost of the long-term maintenance of their preferred remedy, the “waste management area.”
- Public comment is poorly timed. The sole public hearing and the bulk of the public comment period are slated for August, a time when many people are on vacation and when many community groups aren’t meeting. DEC should extend the public comment period by an additional 30 days to ensure that the public has a real chance to consider and comment on this plan.

Taking on the Doctrine of Discovery: What Are Our Next Steps?

The Indigenous Values Initiative is excited to announce the conference “Taking on the Doctrine of Discovery: What Are Our Next Steps?” at the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center.
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm on Saturday (banquet 6:00pm-9:00pm) and 9:00am-1:00pm on Sunday

Summary: In 2014, before the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center had officially opened, we held a first conference titled “The Doctrine of Discovery: After Repudiation, What Next?” About 40 delegates from different faith traditions attended. This year’s conference builds on the 2014 meeting. The Skä·noñh Center is now open and it is a good context from which to draw the values of the Haudenosaunee to affect positive change. As with the previous meeting, we will first to learn about the devastating impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery first hand from the Haudenosaunee, to understand its history, and then to share strategies for addressing this 500+ year-old ongoing human rights violation. Then we will hear from one another and the ways in which religious and faith communities are pushing back against the Doctrine of Discovery. There will be a traditional foods banquet on the evening of Saturday the 18th followed by screening of the film “Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation” and panel discussion.

URM is a federally funded multi-cultural foster care program. Youth come from refugee camps around the world or flee dangerous conditions in their home county to seek asylum in the United States. The youth are typically young teens who resettle in the United States without their parents due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, separation or are orphaned. Goals of the URM Program include supporting youth in exploring and adjusting to life in America while preserving their own culture and preparing for independence.

Syracuse Canvassing for Health Care for All, District 50

Conversations about experiences with the for-profit health system are proven to be the most effective method to grow support for New York Health and Medicare for All. That’s why Campaign for NY Health volunteers are canvassing door to door to talk with people in our community about the healthcare system. District 50 is a very important district for NY state Health – join us!
Before beginning door-knocking, we will begin with a training that has been developed by organizers with National Nurses United to prepare us to have meaningful one-on-one conversations about the NY Health Act and Medicare for All. Then, in pairs, we will canvass door-to-door to talk with community members, to hear about their experiences with the current healthcare system, and to invite them to support the New York Health Act and Medicare for All. To transform the healthcare system for all of us, we need everyone! Everybody in, nobody out!
