There is a hearing for a new downtown project by Commonspace Warren LLC. The developers are asking for $256, 647 in mortgage recording and sales tax exemptions. They are not asking for a PILOT.
There will be a vote (no hearing) on the Deys Plaza’s project application for $266, 250 in mortgage recording and sales tax exemption. The developer is not asking for a PILOT..

The Cost of Freedom: Court Watch Training hosted by Unchained
Tuesday January 15th 5 PM – 7 PM @ Beauchamp Branch Library- 2111 S Salina St, Syracuse
Hundreds of people, disproportionately Black and Brown folks, are locked up in the Onondaga County jail (“Justice Center”) every night simply because they cannot afford to pay their bail and buy their freedom. We do not need to wait on Albany to change New York’s bail system. We can transform our own system here in Onondaga County right now!
Come learn about how bail is set at arraignments and get trained to be a court watcher so that we can hold judges and attorneys
accountable. Court watchers will volunteer to occasionally attend arraignments in downtown Syracuse and document what they see by filling out a one page form
for each case.
Refreshments will be provided at the training. This is a joint project of Unchained and the Criminal Justice Task Force of the Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse (ACTS).

Study Group: Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Disposessed”

This study group we will venture away from our normal focus on theory, strategy, politics and history and explore socialist themes in fiction. We will read Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Disposessed.” The novel won the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel and the National Book Award. The book explores themes of anarchism, socialism, capitalism and utopia and is widely read in university classes and by readers around the world.
2019 State of the City Address

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh will report on his first year in office and discuss forward-looking plans for the city.
It will be his second State of the City address. The annual report is a requirement of the City Charter to be delivered to the Syracuse Common Council before the end of January.
Free parking will be available in the City Center parking garage at 520 S. Clinton Street and at the surface lot at 484 S. Salina Street entered off of W. Onondaga Street or S. Clinton Street.
This event is free and open to the community.

The Friends of the Onondaga Lake Bald Eagles invite all bald eagle admirers to learn about, observe, and appreciate the bald eagles of Murphy’s Island at a family-friendly event on Saturday, January 19th at 8 a.m. at the Destiny Mall parking lot. Local eagle experts and wildlife photographers will be there with plenty of equipment, knowledge, and tips on how to enjoy and take memorable photographs of bald eagles. Workshops Offered:
– Ending Militarism: Central to Ending Poverty and Racism, led by Diane Swords and Peter Swords, members of the Beyond War and Militarism committee, a joint committee of the Syracuse Peace Council and CNY Solidarity Coalition.
– Reinvest CNY! Workshop led by representatives of Cooperative Federal Credit Union, Hansen’s Advisory Services, and the Central New York Community Foundation. Effect change nationally, globally, and right here in our community, by reinvesting for equitability.
– Poverty in Syracuse, led by Deka Dancil, Director Shonnard St Boys and Girls Club and president Urban Jobs Task Force, and Misse Ross, community member/advocate and outspoken progressive organizer with Uplift and CNY Solidarity Coalition.
On Monday we invite members to involve themselves in service to the community by volunteering their time or donating.
Have a new or gently used coat, winter outerwear, or nonperishable food items to donate? Bring them with you and volunteers will make sure they get to the United Way of Central New York’s MLK Day Food and Clothing Drive taking place at the Southwest Community Center Monday January 21st 8AM – 12PM.

The Justice for Palestine committee invites you to join us for an informational event and discussion on current Palestinian human rights issues, and to kick off our 2019 petitioning campaign to help end Israeli military detention of Palestinian children!
We will discuss water rights in the West Bank and Gaza, the economic importance and symbolism of olive trees, the crippling blockade of Gaza and recent Great March of Return movement, and the Israeli’s military’s systematic ill-treatment of Palestinian children through detention and imprisonment. We’ll explain and learn from one another about actions we can take, individually and collectively, to oppose the Israeli military occupation of Palestine and support Palestinian human rights.
Free and open to the public. Light food & drinks will be served.
