SPECIAL SECTION – URGENT EFFORT TO PASS NY HEALTH ACT
WEEK OF ACTION for NY Health

Tuesday May 4 – Monday May 11

Call John Mannion and CNY Legislators to pass the NY Health Act

For the first time in history, a majority of state legislators in the Assembly and Senate are supporting the, NY Health Act, the bill to make healthcare a guaranteed right to all New Yorkers by setting up a comprehensive universal, single-payer healthcare program. However, passage is not assured – see the Jacobin article for explanation. Calls are needed to CNY legislators in support of the NY Health Act. Use this tool from the Campaign for NY Health to contact lawmakers.Senator John Mannion is not yet a cosponsor and needs to hear from constituents about the importance of passing the Health Act. Senator Rachel May and Assemblymembers Hunter, Stirpe, and Magnarelli are longtime co-sponsors – please thank them and urge them to push for a vote on the Health Act this session.

Join CNY Solidarity Coalition, Syracuse DSA, The Campaign for NY Health, and others for a WEEK of ACTION to push our legislators to put PEOPLE FIRST in Pandemic Recovery! #PassNYHealth!

Commit to participating in one or more of our action items this week!

The New York Health Act [A6058/S5474] will provide comprehensive, universal health coverage — including long-term care — for every resident of New York. Learn more here.

And read this article for some background:

New York State Could Finally Get Single-Payer Health Care Read it on Jacobin

“It was safe for liberal legislators to support this overwhelmingly popular measure when it didn’t have the votes. They could get moral credit from progressives without having to face the political consequences of enacting genuinely redistributive policy. Now that it has a fighting chance, will the Senate and Assembly leadership actually introduce the bill?”

TUESDAY

Phone, email or tweet to your state representatives to #PassNYHealth! Using this simple online tool – call, email and tweet at your elected officials in the Senate and Assembly, asking them to pass the New York Health Act this year. Many of our local representatives have committed to co-sponsoring the NY Health Act. For those who have co-sponsored  – Senator May, Assemblymembers Hunter, Magnarelli and Stirpe, please thank them and ask that they make their support public. Senator Mannion needs additional encouragement from constituents to co-sponsor this important legislation.

2 Years After Passing A Landmark Climate Law, New York Has No Plan To Fund It

Governor Cuomo just approved the largest budget in New York history — and it has virtually no new funding to help meet the state’s emissions goals. Read it on Grist

“The Climate and Community Investment Act, introduced this month in the legislature, would aim to raise $15 billion each year from polluters by charging a fee of $55 per ton of fossil fuel emissions, making dirty energy sources less competitive.”

Poverty in Syracuse and the Potential for Racial and Economic Justice through the I-81 Project
Deka Dancil is manager of bias response and education at Syracuse University and president of the Urban Jobs Taskforce Board of Directors. Deka’s talk explored the history of the I-81 Viaduct and its role in the concentrated poverty and racial segregation that exists in Syracuse as well as look at how racial and economic justice may be achieved through the upcoming rebuild.

Join Dr. Heidi Peltier, a research fellow at the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range, to discuss the United States military spending and what it means for our national priorities. What does national security mean as we recover from the pandemic, live through the climate crisis and so much more. How can we end the military industrial complex so our national priorities are the inequalities of this country rather than a war economy.

Syracuse Parole Justice Town Hall

May 6, 2021 06:00 PM

Center for Community Alternatives

Join us for a Town Hall to hear from formerly incarcerated people, families and lawmakers about the urgent need for parole justice in New York State. Together, we can end mass incarceration and bring our elders and loved ones home. In New York, there is a crisis of aging and dying in prisons due to decades of harsh sentencing and a racially biased parole system that values vengeance and endless punishment above redemption and personal transformation. RSVP here: bit.ly/syracuse-parole-justice.

During the first half our meeting we will hear from Joe Bennett, DSA endorsed candidate for Onondaga County Legislature. Then we will share and discuss plans for organizing in support of universal healthcare and fundraising for the New York Abortion Fund.

What is the Socialist Feminist Working Group?? We recognize that capitalism is a barrier to women’s liberation, and other oppressions like sexism and racism are barriers to human liberation. The Socialist Feminist Working Group seeks to fight the oppression of cis women, trans people, and gender nonconforming people on a local and national level by focusing on economic and social issues. Let’s meetup, share our experience, and decide how we can fight together for our collective rights.
