Vote Early Through November 5th! Election Day is one week away! Do you have a plan to vote? Do your friends, family and neighbors?
In 2021, the City of Syracuse had 70,491 registered voters but only 20,174 people voted! Make sure Onondaga County knows that Syracuse is the heart of Onondaga County. Every vote counts, especially in Local Elections!

The Syracuse Onondaga NAACP hosted a Candidates Forum on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 5:30 pm at Bellegrove Missionary Baptist Church, Syracuse N.Y. The event was moderated by Bishop Colette Matthews-Carter. Candidates for Onondaga County Executive, Onondaga County Clerk, Onondaga County Comptroller, Onondaga County District Attorney were given the opportunity to speak and answer questions from the audience and members of the Syracuse Onondaga County NAACP.

- Meetings will start at 2 PM, followed by in-person Committee Meetings when scheduled.

If you are heartbroken seeing the news of death and destruction in Gaza and feeling powerless and sick to your stomach bc the U.S. government is supporting the collective punishment and genocide of Palestinians in Gaza…yeah, me too.
One things we can ALL do is CALL our members of Congress. It’s easier that you think and it takes less than 5 minutes. And it’s so very important. The message is simple: Support a Ceasefire and Stop the Genocide. Jewish Voice for Peace has this awesome and easy call tool you can use and share.

Commissioner: Onondaga County is underfunding our elections (Guest Opinion by Dustin M. Czarny)

The GOP caucus of the Onondaga County Legislature only responded by putting less than half of our shortfall, approximately $475,000, in contingency. They blocked every attempt by the Democratic caucus to address our needs and add staff and funding. This will mean that during one of the busiest election seasons in our generation, we will need to continually go back to the legislature to ask them to release funds while trying to serve the most basic functions of our democracy.

Onondaga County Makes Citizens Fish For Information About Aquarium
|
For the amount of taxpayer money to be spent on the county executive’s vanity aquarium, taxpayers are being kept in the dark on updates. Where are the designs for the aquarium that were to be released this summer? Where are the updated project costs?
It seems the county executive is purposely delaying and denying FOIL requests. Residents have a right to information and it should be given in a timely manner. If the county can’t handle requests, they should hire more people or proactively share information on their website. Changes are desperately needed in Onondaga County. Make sure you vote accordingly on Nov. 7.

A Conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates
|
Friday, November 3 | 5 p.m. in SUNY Oswego’s Waterman Theatre
Coates is the author of the bestselling books “The Beautiful Struggle,” “We Were Eight Years in Power,” “The Water Dancer” and “Between the World and Me,” which won the National Book Award in 2015. He was a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship that same year.
As a journalist with a career spanning over two decades, he’s written for numerous publications including The New York Times, The Washington City Paper, The Village Voice and The New Yorker. During his time reporting for The Atlantic between 2008-2018, he penned numerous articles and essays, including the National Magazine Award-winning 2012 essay “Fear of a Black President” and the influential June 2014 essay “The Case For Reparations.”
He also enjoyed a successful run writing Marvel’s “Black Panther” (2016-2021) and “Captain America” (2018-2021) comics series.

Narrative Sovereignty & Climate Action

Narrative sovereignty is a key component of equitable, ethical, and effective responses to the consequences of a changing climate. In this free and public event, Ahmed Badr and Ruth Łchavaya K’isen Miller (Curyung Tribe of DillinEArly Voting gham) use poetry, music, and visual art to demonstrate and advocate for narrative sovereignty in the pursuit of environmental justice. They explore the ways in which sovereignty takes different forms and expressions across their respective communities.

Witness to Injustice Program

Witness to Injustice is a unique three-hour interactive group educational experience. It uses an experiential, participatory model to share the disturbing history of what Indigenous Peoples have experienced through colonization with a focus on the experience of the Onondaga Nation and other Haudenosaunee Peoples. The program seeks to foster truth, understanding and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the part of the world now known as the United States; especially in the territory stewarded by people of the Onondaga Nation and other Haudenosaunee peoples. It was created in collaboration with Kairos Canada and involves facilitation by Onondaga Nation citizens and non-Indigenous allies. Witness to Injustice is a project of Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation / Syracuse Peace Council.
This project was made possible with the funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

National March on Washington: Free Palestine!

This significant demonstration is being organized by a coalition of dedicated groups, including the Palestinian Youth Movement, the USPCN (US Palestinian Community Network), the Answer Coalition, the People’s Forum, Al-Awda, the American Muslim Alliance, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, the National Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Palestinian Feminist Collective.
We are seeking volunteers to drive vans and/or buses from Syracuse to DC and back- 2 drivers per vehicle. Your support in this capacity would be greatly appreciated. Please feel out the relevant question in the form below. Fill out this Google form to reserve a seat.
COST: Sliding scale from $5 to $50. You will be prompted to pay by credit card or via Paypal after completing the form. Please fill out the form for each person reserving a seat. Pay what is reasonable for you.

This Armistice Day VFP and BWaM call upon all veterans and people who wish to commemorate the true meaning of Armistice Day to gather with us. In our continual effort to reclaim Armistice Day we will “Imagine Armistice Day in Syracuse”. We will gather, not to pay homage to the weapons of destruction, but to renew our commitment to work to end all wars and to foster peace and justice, at home and abroad. We will exercise appropriate social distancing and request all to wear masks.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
