We encourage anyone who wants to get involved especially in meeting with your local Common council member please contact us. Owens-Chaplin was among a panel that included other residents and state Sen. Rachel May that drew city residents to the Dunbar Center Friday night to spur action to make sure public housing residents are heard as land is freed up when I-81 is torn down.

“I think (I-81) is so connected to the public housing issue that we can’t talk about one without talking about the other,” Owens-Chaplin said. “In the time that we’re talking about redevelopment, if we’re not being intentional about making sure residents aren’t put first and their needs aren’t being put first, then we run the risk of repeating the history of the original build.”

…But now so-called “internment camps” are back in the news.

Trump has promised his supporters that in a second term he would launch “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” To deport as many as ten million of what he called “foreign national invaders,” Trump advisor Stephen Miller explained on a November podcast, the administration would federalize National Guard troops from Republican-dominated states and send them around the country to round people up, moving them to “large-scale staging grounds near the border, most likely in Texas,” that would serve as internment camps.

Arguments are underway at the International Court of Justice, where more than 50 countries are asking the World Court to issue a nonbinding legal opinion against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza since 1967. Onondaga County is a medical debt hotspot. 14% of all residents have medical debt and in communities of color, 26% of residents have medical debt. Hospitals are required to provide discounted prices to people who earn up to 300% of the federal poverty level. Unfortunately, many hospitals are not distributing these funds to patients. Upstate Medical University Hospital has sued over 4,000 patients since 2020 and continues to do so. Many of those sued are low-income and should have qualified for financial assistance.

Rayan Mohamed, is sophomore film major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Rayan was born in Somalia and spent several years in an Ethiopian refugee camp before moving to Syracuse as a grade-schooler in 2014. Her portrait is featured in the current exhibition, “Mahtab Hussain – Muslims in America: Syracuse Edition”

Justice For Palestine, a committee of the Syracuse Peace Council, presents a screening and discussion of this  2016 film. Polling shows strong global opposition to Israel’s illegal 50-year occupation of Palestinian land, and mounting outrage over Israel’s ongoing slaughter of unarmed Palestinian civilians who are fighting for their rights. Nevertheless, public sympathy and support for Israel within the US continues to hold strong. … the film explores how the Israeli government, the US government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives and interests, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel’s favor. The result is a stunning look at how — and why — American media coverage of the conflict regularly minimizes the occupation, vilifies critics of Israeli policy, and dehumanizes the Palestinian people.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for. 

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
