Help ArtRage reach the finish line!

ArtRage Gallery, Syracuse’s home for social justice art, has just completed a major renovation project greatly increasing the building’s ADA accessibility and environmental sustainability – and it looks pretty good too! They are very close to reaching the goals of the 3-year capital campaign that raised the funds to pay for the project. Help them cross the finish line by making a contribution to the campaign.  Visit artragegallery.org on details on how to donate, check out a series of renovation photos, and see the names of the many community members who have already donated.

And check out the renovations in-person on October 19th  2-4pm when ArtRage hosts an open house to celebrate this accomplishment.

Articles of the Week

Candidates for office use jail and prison as “one size fits all” policy solutions. Here’s how to push back

Ahead of the November elections, we packaged up the facts you need to push for community safety, not cages.

It’s never too late to push your elected officials — and the candidates running to replace them — to try public safety strategies that focus on care, not cages. More or less every elected official has a role to play in dismantling mass incarceration, and the movement for that change must start with pressure from below.

The Return of Ta-Nehisi Coates. A Decade After “The Case for Reparations,” He Is Ready To Take On Israel, Palestine, and the American Media.

Coates aims for the sort of paradigm shift that first earned him renown when he published “The Case for Reparations” in The Atlantic in 2014, in which he staked a claim for what is owed the American descendants of enslaved Africans. This time, he lays forth the case that the Israeli occupation is a moral crime, one that has been all but covered up by the West.

Reforming the Utility System to Better Serve the American Public

There are several problems with the current market structure and regulation of America’s  investor-owned electric utilities, which provide electricity to almost 75% of Americans. For the past 30 years, these electric utilities have overcharged American consumers by an  average of $5 billion per year.

Addressing these and other issues in the electric utilities market should be a top priority for federal and state policymakers. Better governance can not only substantially lower costs for Americans on their electricity bills but also accelerate the transition to clean energy and deliver improved grid reliability to save money and lives. This brief explains how America’s electric markets operate, identifies several problems with our current approach to regulating these markets, and offers recommendations for reform.

Mourn the dead, Fight for the Living: Arms Embargo Now!

Sunday, October 6, 1:00pm – 2:30pm

Onondaga Lake Park, Liverpool

This event will be held at Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool, NY at the creek between Butterfly Garden and the pickleball court.

As we ring in the Jewish year 5875, we will engage in the traditional Jewish New Year ritual known as Tashlich, which means to cast off. This Tashlich, we look back on a year filled with pain and suffering, and we join in our collective grief to fight for an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and carpet bombing of Lebanon. We mourn all lives lost, knowing every child, parent, grandparent, is an entire universe extinguished.

We turn our sorrow to one clear demand: stop the flow of arms to Israel now. The only way to achieve a ceasefire is to stop providing weapons for genocide. We will gather in unity under one banner for this ritual. We respectfully request that participants do not bring signs. Please wear white, as is traditional during the High Holy Days.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

FIRST & THIRD TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH…4 TO 4:45 P.M. (Killer Drones)

Across from the main gate of Hancock AFB, home of the 174th Attack Wing of the NYS National Guard  training Reaper drone operators. 6000 East Molloy Road.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

A handful of us disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.)

EVERY  SATURDAY…9 to 9:45 a.m.

(range of issues: racism, Palestine solidarity  anti-war, anti-war, etc.)

Across from the Syracuse Regional Market, 2100 Park  St. at the 81N Liverpool/Park St. exit. Park in the Market lot on the north side of Park. You can use one of our signs or bring your own.
