Election Day Rally to Get Out the Vote

Election Day, November 5, 12pm to 1pm.  

Read the platform and sign on if you believe massive public subsidies must translate into real quality jobs for members of the CNY community, especially those who have been historically left out of these types of economic opportunities. Further, we define a “good job” as one that guarantees: workers’ have a fair and clear process to organize a union without employer opposition, family-sustaining wages and comprehensive benefits, safe working conditions, equitable hiring and employment practices, and is supported by an accessible workforce pipeline.

Currently, New York’s Constitution prohibits discrimination in a very limited way, only based on race and religion. Prop 1 changes that to protect all New Yorkers from government discrimination by making it clear that no one should be taken advantage of because of their gender, age, ethnicity, pregnancy status, disability status, or if they are LGBT.

Proposition 1 will:

• Cement New Yorkers’ right to abortion in our state constitution

• Make sure the government cannot discriminate against older New Yorkers, pregnant New Yorkers, or LGBTQ New Yorkers when it comes to hiring, promotions, and pay.

• Ensure that older New Yorkers and those with disabilities have the access they need to vote.

• Protect access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, birth control, and IVF, by making sure that politicians can’t pass abortion bans or restrict reproductive health care options.

Governor Kathy Hochul is launching a push for new nuclear power plants in New York. After hosting a “Future Energy Economy Summit” in Syracuse last month (which was invite-only and hosted multiple conversations on new nuclear in New York), the state appears to be moving ahead with planning a future for toxic, polluting, and dangerous reactors.

The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority recently published a “blueprint” for the construction of new reactors and gave the public only 30 days to provide our feedback. While we managed to win an extension, the deadline is soon. We have until November 8th to tell our state and agency leaders that nuclear is NOT a climate solution!

On July 16, a tornado tore through the city of Rome, New York, damaging 370 homes and destroying numerous businesses. This is anything but typical for the small towns of Upstate New York, and residents now face unforeseen repair costs they may not recover from. As the number of extreme weather events in New York continues to grow, taxpayers should not have to continue to foot the bill for the wreckage caused by the climate crisis. Luckily, there is a solution — the New York Climate Change Superfund Act.

The program includes new work by award-winning filmmaker Lynne Sachs, who shot footage in Syracuse with local reproductive justice advocates from Layla’s Got You.

Ricardo Levins Morales is an artist and organizer based in Minneapolis. He uses his art as a form of political medicine to support individual and collective healing from the injuries and ongoing reality of oppression.

Grounded in Ricardo’s practice of art as a form of social and cultural medicine, and drawing on his decades of direct experience, we will explore how it can be applied a wide variety of situations. Participants will consider how to adapt the principles of creativity and narrative strategy to their own work and life situations.

How can victim-survivors, loved ones and laity respond in love and solidarity to the church’s sexual abuse crisis? Events are focused on education, support, and developing hope for the future – and include:

• Fri. 10/25, 7PM: The award-winning play Groomed, performed at the Vatican last November. The 1-hour performance, followed by a talk-back with the actor, evokes strong emotions but is not graphic or offensive. Groomed is meant to educate, inform, and be a catalyst for discussions.

• Sat. 10/26, 10AM-noon: “Truth-telling, Witnessing, Healing: A Trauma-Informed Response to Clergy Sexual Abuse,” a presentation by Dr. Lisa Cataldo: M.Div., Ph.D., Fordham Univ. Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education. (Assoc. Prof. of Mental Health Counseling and Spiritual Integration.)

Counselors trained in trauma response will be on hand for all events.

Explore the City’s Open Data Portal, engage with industry-standard tools for accessing and visualizing open data, collaborate on projects, and compete in a data challenge for a first-place prize of $1,000 supported by an event sponsor.

The 2024 challenge theme is “Healthy Housing: Quality, Safety & Accessibility.” Participants will have the chance to create projects that address critical housing issues in Syracuse using real-world data from both internal and external sources. Participants will have access to various datasets, including Syracuse’s Rental Registry, Code Violations, Vacant Properties, and more. External resources such as the NYS Unified Court System’s Statewide Landlord Tenant Eviction Dashboard and CNY Vitals Pro are also available. 

The free event will include presentations, breakout sessions and development sessions for participants to work on their datasets. Attendees may participate in any or all sessions. Interested participants can go to the City’s Meetup page to register.

It lies within every undocumented immigrant family with the threat that at any moment they can be captured, incarcerated, deported; their lives destroyed. BORDERLAND | The Line Within not only exposes the profitable business of immigration and its human cost, but weaves together the stories of immigrant heroines and heroes resisting and showing a way forward, intent on building a movement in the shadow of the border industrial complex, recognizing the human rights of all.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for. 

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
