Stop Arming Israel – From Syracuse Peace Council
|
The genocide in Palestine continues and Israel continues to receive weapons from the US – this makes us responsible. In a typical year we send $3.8 billion dollars in military aid to Israel aid that could be used for badly underfunded human needs in our country. This year we have already sent an unprecedented $18 billion. In early November Senator Sanders will be bringing for a vote Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to prevent the sale of an additional $20 billion in U.S. weapons to Israel. This is a huge opportunity for our movement to block bombs from reaching Israel. We need to make it crystal clear to our Senators that we refuse to send one more bomb or one more dime to the Israeli government’s genocide of Palestinians.
Call your Senators now and tell them to stop arming Israel.

The first NY HEAT call relay of the season!
|
On Wednesday, October 23, the Renewable Heat Now campaign and more than 200 of our movement allies (including CNY Solidarity Coalition) will release the 4th annual Building Electrification Equity Platform. The NY HEAT Act is one of four Platform pillars, and this call relay will ask Governor Hochul to include the NY HEAT Act in her Executive Budget because the fracked gas system is driving up our energy bills and destroying our climate.
This past spring we came very close to winning the NY HEAT (Home Energy Affordable Transition) Act, in large part due to your attention and advocacy throughout the legislative session. I hope you’ll help get the ball rolling to pass NY HEAT by joining the October 23 call relay!
You will be making a call to Governor Hochul at 518-474-8390 on Wednesday, October 23. Press 1 to leave a message or 2 to speak to an agent, and read the suggested call script below (feel free to personalize it). Please try to speak to an agent if at all possible.
Sample Script: My name is ____ and I’m calling from _____ to urge Governor Hochul to include the NY HEAT Act in her Executive Budget. The fracked gas system is driving up our energy bills and destroying our climate. The Governor needs to end outdated pro-gas laws and unlock funding for clean energy upgrades by passing NY HEAT. Thank you!
When you call, please drop Andra Leimanis at Alliance for a Green Economy a quick email to help her track the number of calls: andra@agreeny.org.

SPEAK OUT TODAY: Nuclear is not a climate solution!
|
Governor Kathy Hochul is launching a push for new nuclear power plants in New York. After hosting a “Future Energy Economy Summit” in Syracuse last month (which was invite-only and hosted multiple conversations on new nuclear in New York), the state appears to be moving ahead with planning a future for toxic, polluting, and dangerous reactors.
The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority recently published a “blueprint” for the construction of new reactors and gave the public only 30 days to provide our feedback. While we managed to win an extension, the deadline is soon. We have until November 8th to tell our state and agency leaders that nuclear is NOT a climate solution!

As Syracuse lawmakers consider ‘good cause’ protections, auditor weighs in to support protections with data

City Auditor Alex Marion is part of a coalition — including Syracuse Tenants Union, Housing Justice for All and labor unions — that is pushing the Syracuse Common Council to greenlight tenant protections.
Here’s Central Current’s take
|
County executive should properly fund elections board, not criticize it (letter to the editor from Mary Kuhn)
|
The county executive has shown an inclination to undercut the voting opportunities of the citizens of Onondaga County. He consistently resisted the full implementation of early voting. He engineered gerrymandered maps. He has initiated a lawsuit, again with taxpayer dollars, to stop local elections from occurring on presidential years when turnout is significantly higher.

Public Hearing on Onondaga County Local Law: Adding a Deputy County Executive for Economic Development & Planning
|
Monday, October 28, 2024 at 10am
14th Floor Civic Center, 421 Montgomery St, Syracuse
At the last Onondaga County legislature meeting on October 8, the legislature voted to abolish over 60 vacant positions in various county departments including our health department, children & family services, social services and more. Right after abolishing these positions, the legislature voted to pass a local law to create a new deputy county executive for economic development and planning. This position would be appointed by the County Executive and would be paid over a six figure salary. This local law was presented to the County Legislature with no reasoning of why this position is needed or who this job is for?
We have seen how Ryan McMahon has made six figure appointments before with Isabelle Harris being appointed to be a director of strategic initiatives and Esteban Gonzalez as deputy director of strategic initiatives. How is a deputy county executive for economic development and planning different from these other positions? Review the local law here and tell Ryan McMhaon to veto this legislation at the required public hearing on October 28th. Or contact Ryan McMahon at (315) 435-3516 ryanmcmahon@ongov.net

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
