PLEASE READ: Our Newsletter and Boycotts/Mass Actions

Wes receive some requests to post information in the newsletter about boycotts or similar mass actions. We sometimes find very little information on their websites. We look for: names listed, board of advisors, sponsors or co-sponsoring organizations, clearly stated goals and objectives, reasons for lists of targets selected. Sometimes there is none of that, leaving us to wonder if it is a scam or an intentional distraction. (Of course there are legitimate reasons people might not want names shown, but that is just one element.)

Boycotts can be highly effective: Civil rights, South Africa divestment, etc. But they must be targeted, clearly defined, and sustained. Our concern is that too many different calls for actions will cause confusion and burnout. We encourage everyone to be mindful of where you spend your money as much as you can. We will continue to watch for credible actions/events.

Meanwhile, don’t buy a Tesla!

Demand the Release of Palestinian Student Activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention

On the evening of March 8, 2025, Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil was detained by the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest comes on the heels of the Department of State’s announcement that it plans to deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. The student, who is Palestinian, is a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. Columbia University, which recently published a new protocol on its plans to cooperate with ICE, has targeted Khalil for his Palestinian identity and outspoken activism on multiple occasions over the last 17 months. He served as a lead negotiator during the Gaza Solidarity Encampment last spring and has frequently appeared in media interviews and press conferences.

Tell Rep. Mannion to hold the line in the government funding battle Link Here

The government will shut down on Friday night unless Congress can pass a spending bill. Democrats came to the table with a simple demand: Guardrails to ensure that the funding allocated by Congress is actually spent — and not frozen by Trump, Musk and the DOGE kids. Instead, Republicans put forward a partisan bill that actually gives Trump and Musk MORE discretion to use taxpayer funds however they choose. No Democrat should vote for this bill. If you’re in a blue district, call your representative today (calls are best, but you can also use this tool to send an email).

Tell Schumer and Gillibrand to hold the line, too  Link Here

If this bill makes it through the House, there will be a lot of pressure on Senate Democrats to vote for it. But amidst this constitutional crisis, Dems should be doing everything possible to STOP Trump and Musk’s assault on our government — not greenlighting legislation that gives them more power to choose which programs to fund or starve of resources. Tell your Democratic senator(s) that now is the time to take a stand.

And remember: reach all your representatives from federal to local levels here:

Rubio and homeland security confirm arrest of Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia protests

A prominent Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia University’s protests against Israel over the war in Gaza is evidently being detained by US immigration authorities at a facility in Louisiana after his arrest, according to information from officials.

A spokesperson for the US’s homeland security department – as well as the country’s top diplomat – confirmed the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia University until this past December who holds permanent US residency…

The department alleged that Khalil’s activism constituted “activities aligned to Hamas”.

Trump’s secretary of state, Marco Rubio, also confirmed the arrest, adding on X: “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”

Multimillionaires Will Decide Tax Policy In GOP-Led Congressional Committees

Average Net Worth of Republican Members on Tax-Writing Panels Is Nearly $15 million–Richest Will Save Millions from Trump Cuts

While wealthy Democrats also serve on these committees, they aren’t promoting continuing the entire Trump tax legislation which primarily benefits rich individuals like them and giant corporations—legislation that would add trillions to the deficit and threaten funding for Social Security, healthcare, education,  housing and other vital public services.

Union leader: Centro continues to undermine workers’ right to organize

These actions are contributing to the company’s ongoing retention issues. The hostile work environment and Centro’s refusal to treat its employees fairly only increase turnover, making it harder for them to retain quality workers. This pattern harms workers and negatively impacts the community, which relies on an effective and dedicated transit workforce.

#TeslaTakeDown protest

Friday, March 14th, 4:00 pm

Fayetteville Tesla dealership, 5427 N. Burdick St., Fayetteville, NY

(FYI there are no sidewalks here)

DID YOU KNOW?

· Elon Musk is using his unelected political position to loot our government, demolish lifesaving services, and make himself richer.

· Musk and his cronies at DOGE have taken control of the Treasury, Social Security, and other departments with no governmental authority. He is baselessly firing thousands of federal workers, stealing private data, and gutting our essential infrastructure.

· Musk is a menace and he must be stopped.

WHY TARGET TESLA?

· Much of Musk’s inflated wealth is tied up in his stake in Tesla.

· A North American sales collapse would be a disaster for Tesla shareholders, starting with Musk himself, who owns around 13 percent of the company.

· Our protests are already damaging Tesla’s sales and reputation. Join us!

Let’s take back our democracy from billionaires.

Homelessness In CNY: Meeting The Rising Challenge

Friday, March 28, 12:05 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

FOCUS Forum from FOCUS Greater Syracuse

Homelessness is on the rise across the country and here in CNY, increasing locally more than 60% since 2019, meaning that nearly 1,200 people in our community find themselves unsheltered or in temporary settings on any given night.

Having a coordinated community response is more important than ever in the efforts to end homelessness.

Each community across the country has what is known as Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care of homelessness. The Housing & Homeless Coalition of Central New York (HHC) acts as the Continuum of Care for Central New York. The HHC organizes community resources, collects and analyzes data from community partners, and develops community-wide strategies to streamline the homelessness response system.

This FOCUS Forum will discuss how the HHC operates and is structured, report on the state of homelessness in our community, and how our community can rise to the growing challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

Focused on the war in the middle East…Israel’s military genocide of Gaza and  invasion of Lebanon. We disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.) When the temperature is below 20 degrees, we cancel!

Watch past meetings about Micron, Good Jobs Town Hall, Rallies and more on our YouTube Channel.
