What to do if the Insurrection Act is invoked
One of Trump’s presidential actions calls for the Secretary of Defense and Homeland Security to submit a joint report by April 20. The report may recommend “whether to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807.” With the Insurrection Act looming, now is the time to learn how it might unfold and the strategic ways to respond — including the power of ridicule.

Syracuse tenants face high eviction rates despite few owing back rent, report finds
Advocates believe the phenomenon is happening because landlords are using the threat of eviction as a tool to punish and control tenants.
CSSNY’s report highlighted giving tenants the right to legal counsel during eviction proceedings, the implementation of “good cause eviction” laws, and instituting rent control measures, as actions cities like Syracuse can take to stop evictions.

Tax Justice Rally
Tuesday, April 15 at 5:30pm
Federal Building, 100 S Clinton St, Syracuse
What is tax justice? Tax justice is a social movement that calls attention to the inequities of our current tax system. In 2024, we the people paid $2.43 trillion in taxes while corporations paid a paltry $530 billion. Corporations pay virtually nothing and rake in trillions in profits while individuals and families struggle to pay rent, buy food, and access healthcare. Tax justice means prioritizing people over profits, investing in programs that promote social justice, and building an economy that works for everyone.

Join us as we dive into the fight to protect voting rights behind bars.
Clyanna Lightbourn, Campaign Manager for the DDDA initiative, will present on the legislation, why it matters, and how we’re organizing to pass it in 2025.

Housing Challenges in the Age of Micron: April FOCUS Forum
Friday, April 25, 12:05 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Zoom. Registration is free and open to everyone.
Micron is preparing to break ground on the first of four new chip fabrication facilities this November. Meanwhile, Onondaga County is spending $27 million on additional land near Micron to attract supply chain companies. This surge in economic development will require more housing.
How will the County and City respond to this challenge? Closer to Micron, will we build walkable “town growth centers”, as recommended by the County, where houses, apartments, and townhouses surround a retail and office core? Or will new suburban housing continue the patterns of the past: more single-family houses on large lots? How much of this new housing will be built in the City? Can the City leverage this new development to help it address its affordable housing crisis?

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
