Advocacy

Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE) works for safe, affordable energy and the development of a green economy in New York state. Our goal is a prosperous, safe, and healthy New York, fulfilling the promise of conservation, energy efficiency, and safe, clean renewable energy sources to end our state’s reliance on wasteful and environmentally destructive forms of energy. The Alliance works to promote this transition to a carbon-free and nuclear-free future and educates the public about alternatives that can revitalize the economy and safeguard human health and the environment.

Beyond War and Militarism (BWaM) is a joint committee of the SPC and the CNY Solidarity Coalition. It draws resources from both parent organizations and enhances their interrelationship. 

The Committee is dedicated to nonviolent protest of:

United States’ or NATO’s participation in multiple wars and plans to engage in other wars.

The acceptance of nuclear weapons as tools of war.

The enormous size of the so-called “defense” budget.

The pervasive infiltration of militarism into U.S. culture and power structure.

The corporate state that is the primary beneficiary and supporter of this militarism.

We (B.C.P.) are focused on providing a safe and confidential environment to the inner-city LGBTQ community as well as offering networking opportunities, health information and peer support. We are the voice of the LGBTQ inner-city community.

The Campaign for New York Health is a coalition of organizations, unions, businesses and individuals committed to guaranteeing healthcare for every New Yorker by passing universal healthcare in New York State (New York Health Act).

The mission of CNY Pride is to serve the Central New York lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and their allies.
Our annual Pride Parade and Festival, along with similar events throughout the year, provides a forum to celebrate and affirm individual sexual and gender identity, to commemorate our community's rich history and diversity, and to renew our dedication to ending intolerance and achieving equal rights.

The Citizen Review Board (CRB) was created to ensure an open citizen-controlled process for reviewing grievances involving members of the Syracuse Police Department (SPD).

The CRB works to provide:

• Public accountability over the powers exercised by members of SPD• Preservation of the integrity of the SPD• A forum for people to submit complaints about members of SPD to be heard and reviewed fairly and impartially by appointed community members

We work to eliminate housing discrimination, promote open communities, and ensure equal access to housing opportunities for all people in Central and Northern New York.

We envision a state and nation in which farmworkers receive equal protection under law, earn a living wage, live in comfortable housing, are safe and healthy, receive due respect as workers and as individuals, and participate fully in their communities.

We see the core vision of the DK project as institutional change for building inclusive futures, for example, an academy that recognizes all knowledges as equal rather than fitting into a preset hierarchy. Toward this end, we systematically engage the campus community in a variety of conversations, discussions, and public events geared towards building a sustainable campus culture that recognizes the transformative knowledges that the collective working group brings to the table. So, our aim is to construct ways of “democratizing knowledge,” revitalizing and transforming the reach of these knowledges to address difference, identity, equality, justice, citizenship, and democracy and making these knowledges more visible, more sustainable, and more institutionally public on the campus and beyond.

Eastern Farmworkers is a volunteer-run organization involved with low-income working families. We work with farmers and their workers, and former manufacturing workers who have had to assume temporary jobs after plants like Carrier relocated. We work to bridge the gap between rural and urban communities, and maintain healthy relationships between employers and employees who are often affected by the same policies. We allocate benefits such as job and housing referrals, food and clothing distribution, and volunteer dental, legal, and medical services.

Focus on Awareness and Information Resources of New York, Inc. We host the educational booth at the New York State Fair to provide information and resources on issues ranging from bullying of LGBTQ youth, discrimination facing members of the LGBTQ community in employment, housing and health issues, GENDA, marriage equality and protection of LGBTQ families. Our Booth is a highly visible space that welcomes the general public as well as members of the LGBTQ community, as we work to promote inclusion and diversity through educational information and resources.

Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food. We partner with over 370 community partners in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

The core of our work is achieved by partnering with local agencies that distribute food to individuals and families in need. The key partners that make up our emergency food network are food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters. Other not-for-profit agencies such as day care centers, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, and group homes are able to utilize membership as a way to supplement their agency food needs.

The Greater Syracuse Tenants Network (Tenants Network) supports housing in Central New York by assisting low income tenants obtain and preserve safe and affordable rental housing. The Tenants Network’s approach is to organize tenants into associations at individual low income properties to represent their interests with the management, supervisory agencies such as DHCR and HUD, and in community forums such as TNT. The key to this approach is providing leadership development, training, information, education and counseling to tenant leaders and individuals, who then become the leaders of the tenant associations. The Tenants Network provides counseling, outreach and referrals to assist tenants to transition into home ownership. The Tenants Network conducts training for landlords and human service workers.

HeatSmart CNY helps connect home and building owners with the many programs available to help reduce the costs of energy efficiency upgrades—like insulation, air sealing, and efficient electric heat pumps—as part of our energy system’s move towards beneficial electrification. We partner with select reputable installers to take you from awareness to education to implementation. We are making homes in our region more comfortable, more cost-effective, and better for the environment.

The Jewish Federation of CNY cares for those in need, rescues those in harm’s way, strengthens Jewish identity and builds vibrant Jewish communities in Syracuse, in Israel and around the world.  We do the good that is in your heart.

The Syracuse University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center strives to serve people with marginalized genders and sexualities by offering support, building community, and educating members of the Syracuse University community.

The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation is dedicated to educating current and future generations about Gage’s work and its power to drive contemporary social change.

At the heart of our mission is the story of Matilda Joslyn Gage, a progressive visionary of women’s rights and human liberation and an often unacknowledged leader who, with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony wrote the arguments, inspired the passions and organized the political action of the 19th century woman suffrage movement in the United States.

Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We also work in our own communities and with business leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe. Moms Demand Action has established a volunteer chapter in every state of the country and Washington, D.C. and is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly 10 million supporters.

National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the Nation with chapters throughout the entire United States. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, nationality or gender.

Grassroots organization of Central New Yorkers that recognizes and supports the sovereignty of the traditional government of the Onondaga Nation. A program of the Syracuse Peace Council, NOON supports the right of native peoples to reclaim land, and advocates for fair settlement of any claims which are filed.

We are the Central New York office of the New York Civil Liberties Union, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of all New Yorkers. Our regional office covers seven counties.

The New York Civil Liberties Union, the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, promotes and defends the fundamental principles and values embodied in the Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution and New York State Constitution, including freedom of speech and religion, and the right to privacy, equality, and due process of law. We carry out our mission through public education, advocacy and litigation.

PACCNY seeks to create a platform for the promotion of debate, ideas, and activities that strengthen the historical bonds that have united people of African origin on the continent and in the Diaspora through years of political, cultural, and economic struggles against dehumanization by slavery, imperialism, colonialism and neocolonialism. It seeks to provide space for an agenda that promotes and celebrates the efforts of people of African origin towards self-assertion, human dignity and self-determination. Internationalist in vision, PACCNY also seeks to engage in activities that promote understanding among all global communities, especially those who suffer from oppressive structures and systems

Peace Action New York State is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that promotes non-violent resolution of conflict, the abolition of nuclear weapons, halting the global spread of conventional arms, building a human rights culture, and supporting human needs instead of militarism.

A community chapter in Syracuse is the Nuclear Free World Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council.

Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that champions the public interest in the halls of power. We defend democracy, resist corporate power, and fight to ensure that government works for the people – not big corporations. We mobilize activists to grow democratic movements, watchdog Congress, sue the government when it fails to do its job, petition regulatory agencies to safeguard the public, and engage in cutting-edge research that effects change.With rare exceptions, we don’t participate in partisan political activities or endorse any candidates for elected office. We take no government or corporate money, which allows us to remain fiercely independent and call out bad actors – no matter who they are or how much money and power they have.

Provides resources, education, advocacy and collaborative programs to improve health and reduce health disparities in areas such as prenatal and perinatal health, adolescent pregnancy and parenting, and HIV/AIDS, in Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, and Cayuga counties.

Promotes the well-being of older gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and allies in Central New York through health programs, social activities, and education.

The Stand is an online South Side community newspaper that is written for and by South Side residents. As the voice of the South Side community of Syracuse, the paper aims to start a community conversation online by inviting residents of the South Side to share their stories. The paper is the brainchild of the South Side Newspaper Project, a collaboration of the South Side Community Coalition, Syracuse University and a number of dedicated South Side community residents.

The Syracuse Community Choir is a community of people who gather to sing songs of peace and social justice. We work to educate each other and the greater community about social and political issues – mainly focusing on issues of peace, indigenous rights, civil rights, environmental rights, religious acceptance, and inclusion of all people.

The Syracuse chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, an autonomous and democratically organized part of the national movement for political and activist organizing. We help with mutual aid, housing, international solidarity, labor organizing, and more.

We work to disrupt inequality, dismantle racism, and accelerate change in key areas including criminal justice, health care, education, climate, economy, advocacy & litigation and next generation leadership.

Since 1977, Syracuse United Neighbors (SUN) is a grassroots neighborhood group that organizes residents in low income neighborhoods. We help create active knowledgeable and involved citizens that make their streets, neighborhoods and city better.

Established to support and promote the academic achievement, multicultural competence, social development, civic engagement, and retention of students from historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups at Syracuse University.

We advocate for people locked up by police and locked out of schools to build power and chart a path toward liberation by making racial and economic justice a reality.

Upstate Drone Action is a decentralized, informally-organized, grassroots network of activists mostly from upstate New York. We seek to educate the public and Hancock Air Base personnel re the war crimes perpetuated with the MQ9 Reaper. This unmanned aircraft is remotely piloted via satellite from Hancock, home of the 174th Attack Wing of the NYS Air National Guard located just north of Syracuse in the Town of DeWitt. We also seek to educate the public about the risks of drone proliferation and blowback as well as the surveillance and civil liberties threat the Reaper and other robotic planes pose domestically. Legitimized by international law and by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Upstate Drone Action members heed our consciences and the Nuremburg mandate to expose and impede our nation’s war crime. Committed to nonviolent direct action and civil resistance, members periodically undergo arrest, trial, fines, Orders of Protection and incarceration.

Vera House is a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence service agency providing shelter, advocacy, and counseling services for women, children & men, education and prevention programs and community coordination.

Syracuse VFP is a chapter of Veterans For Peace and welcomes veterans, active military, and supporters in the greater Central NY region who share a vision of building a culture of peace and social justice. We are part of a global organization of Military Veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using our experiences and lifting our voices. We inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. We are one of of over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war, and most significantly, working to end all wars.

WHOLE ME, Inc. was founded in 2003 in response to families looking for an after-school enrichment program that was accessible to deaf and hard of hearing children. Although there are several wonderful after-school programs in Central New York, none of them use sign language as the primary mode of communication. Children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing often feel left out, but this is not the case at WHOLE ME! All of our programs are bilingual, using both American Sign Language (ASL) and English, and bi-cultural, celebrating both Deaf & Hearing culture.

WHOLE ME is proud to be the only organization in Central New York to provide after school activities that are creative and fun in a safe learning environment fully accessible for deaf/hard-of-hearing children, their siblings and their families!
